UK companies to design, manufacture AUKUS nuclear submarines
UK companies a 4 billion pound ( USD 4.9 bn) contract to design and manufacture a nuclear-powered attack submarine as part of the country's AUKUS programme with Australia and the United States, Al Jazeera reported. The first of the submarines will be delivered into service in the UK in the late 2030s and the first Australian ones will follow in the early 2040s. The SSN-AUKUS program aims to enhance the capabilities of the UK, Australia, and the US to counter regional security challenges, particularly from China in the Asia-Pacific region, Al Jazeera reported. UK's Defence Ministry in a statement on Sunday said that the contract with BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce and Babcock «represents a significant milestone for both the UK and the trilateral AUKUS programme as a whole». It said that the new submarines, known as SSN-AUKUS, «will be the largest, most advanced and most powerful attack submarines ever operated» by the Royal Navy and will «combine world-leading sensors, design and weaponry in one vessel». The plans for SSN-AUKUS were unveiled in March by the leaders of Australia, the UK and the US and came as the three countries ramped up their efforts to counter China in the Asia Pacific region. The nuclear-powered vessels — which have far greater stealth and range and mark the first time Washington has shared nuclear-propulsion technology with a country other than the UK — represent a significant upgrade to Australia's current diesel-powered fleet, as per Al Jazeera. Previously, Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles described the AUKUS deal as «the biggest step forward in our military capability that we've had since the end of World War II». Through the AUKUS, Washington intends to sell Canberra up to five of its

Modi govt provided over Rs 2 lakh crore rural funds to West Bengal: Minister Giriraj Singh
Narendra Modi-led NDA government has provided Rs 2.05 lakh crore to West Bengal under various rural development schemes in the past nine years, way above the Rs 58,058 crore released during the UPA regime, rural development minister Giriraj Singh said on Monday, rejecting the state's allegations of discrimination. On Monday, Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers held protests in Delhi, alleging that the Centre isn't releasing funds to West Bengal under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and other rural schemes. The Centre stopped the release of funds to West Bengal in early 2022 under Section 27 of the MGNREGA on the ground that the state government had failed to initiate adequate action against those involved in the alleged irregularities detected by national monitoring teams in 2019 and 2021, Union government officials had said earlier. Still, Rs 54,150 crore (central share) has been released to West Bengal under the MGNREGS in the past nine years, against Rs 14,985 crore by the UPA government, Singh said in a statement released by the rural development ministry. Similarly, Rs 30,000 crore has been released to the state under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, compared with Rs 4,466 crore during the UPA period, he added. Singh accused the TMC-led West Bengal government of siphoning off public money released by the Centre by issuing 2.5 million fake NREGS job cards.

Layoff packages were seven times the norm, says General Motors as workers begin an indefinite chain hunger strike
General Motors on Monday maintained that it has done everything possible to resolve amicably the deadlock with workers at its now-closed India factory near Pune, including offering compensation at seven times the statutory requirement, even as more than 1,000 sacked workers began an indefinite chain hunger strike. The striking former workers are protesting unemployment and their non-absorption by Hyundai Motor India, which has signed an initial agreement to acquire the Talegaon facility. The American automaker is now keen on signing the final agreement with Hyundai Motor India, a spokesperson at GM said. «Everyone previously employed by General Motors at the Talegaon plant has been legally separated from GM and were offered a separation package more than seven times the statutory requirement.
