SC gives speaker 4 days to set timeline for Sena MLAs' disqualification hearing
Shiv Sena, and demanded a timeline for the same by Tuesday. If the speaker fails to give a timeline by then, the bench will have to pass a «pre-emptory order» directing the speaker to decide on the disqualification pleas «within a time frame», a bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud said on Friday. It is a «matter of concern» that the order of the Supreme Court is not being implemented, the CJI observed verbally, and said the speaker is «duty bound» to comply with the directions of the top court. The «dignity» of the court must be maintained, he added. Expressing strong dissatisfaction with the slow progress in the proceedings before the speaker, the CJI observed that the bench had in July issued notice on a plea filed by Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena seeking directions to the speaker to set a schedule for deciding the disqualification pleas.

NCP symbol fight: EC hears Sharad Pawar, Ajit factions, next hearing on Monday
Sharad Pawar faction of the NCP has asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to not freeze the party symbol or name till the entire process of hearing the dispute of who is the real NCP is decided by the poll body. The development came during a hearing at the EC in New Delhi where Ajit and Sharad Pawar argued why their factions should be recognised as the real NCP. The Ajit Pawar camp, however, in its affidavit to the EC has asked it to rule in its favour highlighting the EC's order earlier this year when it gave the Shiv Sena name and party symbol to the Eknath Shinde faction as it had more MLAs and MPs than the Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena. On Friday, the Sharad Pawar camp again argued that there was no split in the party and that the main NCP remains intact and is with the senior Pawar.

OPT program for international STEM students to continue as US Supreme Court refuses hearing
international STEM students in the United States, the Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal challenging the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program. The OPT program, which permits international students in the United States on student visas to work during their studies or up to one year post-graduation, has been a crucial pathway for international students seeking employment opportunities in the country. At the heart of the case was the extension of the OPT program for up to 36 months after graduation, a provision introduced by the Department of Homeland Security in 2008 and modified in 2016. This extension was exclusively available to students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) fields, making it especially attractive to tech companies. The Washington Alliance of Technology Workers (Washtech), a Communication Workers of America affiliate, initiated the legal challenge against this extension in 2014, arguing that it allowed tech employers to sidestep the H-1B visa program, which has limited annual quotas and is assigned through a lottery system. The STEM OPT extension not only simplifies the hiring process for tech employers but also enables visa holders to apply for a green card during their stay in the US, offering a pathway to permanent residency similar to H-1B visa holders. Throughout the legal battle, Washtech faced several setbacks, including a critical decision by the DC Circuit Court of Appeals in 2022. The union's argument questioned the Department of Homeland Security's authority to establish the OPT STEM extension, contending that it reshaped the entire non-immigrant visa system and undermined protections for American workers.
