J&J’s $40 Billion Split-Off Sets Stage for Pharma, Medical Tech Expansion
Johnson & Johnson plans to tap billions in proceeds from the recent split-off of its consumer-health business to fuel growth in pharmaceuticals and medical technology through capital allocation, which could include new acquisitions and investments in product offerings and robotics. The New Brunswick, N.J.-based healthcare giant in May sold shares in Kenvue, which owns brands such as Band-Aid and Tylenol, through an initial public offering that netted J&J $13.2 billion in cash. In August J&J shed about 80% of its Kenvue shares through a roughly $40 billion split-off, whereby some investors chose to trade in their shares of J&J for Kenvue ones.

Gaming self-regulation yet to kick off as consensus eludes
Self-regulation in online gaming remains stalled more than four months after the plan was floated as the industry continues to be a divided house, three industry officials said, even as the government worries whether some entities may exert undue influence over the regulating entities. On 6 April, the ministry of electronics and information technology (Meity) moved to create a framework of self-regulatory organizations (SROs), which will act against gambling apps and betting apps offering real-money games. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union minister of state for electronics and IT, said it will start off with three such bodies, with scope for more to follow.

Cross-border payments can be made efficient via CBDCs: Das
New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Shaktikanta Das on Monday said that cross-border payments can be made more efficient through adoption of digital currencies. “The empirical data that we are generating would go a long way in shaping the policies and future course of action. With its instant settlement feature, I believe, CBDCs (central bank digital currencies) can play an important role in making cross-border payments cheaper, faster and more secure," he said at the G20 TechSprint 2023.

Gillian Keegan expresses frustration over School Concrete Crisis, swearing caught on mic
Gillian Keegan, the UK's Education Secretary, found herself in the spotlight after being inadvertently recorded expressing frustration over the handling of the school building crisis. Following an interview with ITV, Keegan was caught on a live microphone questioning the lack of acknowledgment for her department's efforts in addressing the ongoing school concrete crisis. In an unguarded moment, she candidly remarked, «Does anyone ever say you've done a good job because everyone else has sat on their a** and done nothing?» She followed this with a rueful, «Any sign of that, no?» A source from Downing Street promptly condemned Keegan's comments, describing them as «completely wrong», as reported by BBC.

UK PM Rishi Sunak defends actions over school closures
Rishi Sunak on Monday strongly defended his record in government, dubbing allegations that he cut education funding as «completely and utterly wrong» amid an ongoing crisis over a light-weight concrete that is causing school closures in England and Wales. Thousands of pupils face disruption at the start of a new term this week after over 100 schools face full or partial closure because of concerns about reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), which is prone to collapse. A former senior civil servant in the Department for Education (DfE) alleged that it was under Sunak's term as Chancellor that the UK Treasury failed to properly fund school rebuilding schemes. «I think that is completely and utterly wrong.
