Teaching law in regional languages can improve access to legal system: CJI
Chief Justice of India Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud on Saturday said law students should be well-versed with regional languages and laws so that people's access to the legal system can be improved. Addressing the third convocation of Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University, Lucknow, Justice DY Chandrachud underscored the importance of imparting legal education in «easy language», asserting that it is currently a shortcoming in the legal profession. Citing an analysis done by the research department of the Supreme Court on 81 universities and colleges, the CJI said, «It was found that common people experience hurdles in understanding their rights and schemes meant for them as they do not know English.» «This means that in law universities, legal education is imparted English, and many times, students at legal aid centres are not able explain legal procedures to the common people in regional languages,» he said.

Telecom tariff hike: Govt, regulator won't intervene in matter
«There is enough competition in the telecom sector and the situation is not critical that requires intervention of the authorities. Consumers may feel some pinch of the price rise, but the hike has happened after three years,» one of the officials told ET, asking not to be named. India's three private telcoraised mobile tariffs by 11-25%, with the changes taking effect this week. As per analysts, this would increase the spending on telecom services in urban India to 2.8% of household expenditures in fiscal 2025 from 2.7% in FY24.

Tariff hikes to raise ARPU by 15 pc, help expand operating profits for telcos: Report
Tariff hikes by the top three telcos will help increase the average revenue per user by 15 per cent, and expand the operating profit by over 20 per cent in FY25, a domestic rating agency said on Monday. The 20 per cent hikes by the telcos after a two and half year hiatus can expand telcos' profit before interest lease depreciation and tax (PBILDT) by 20-22 per cent in FY25, Care Ratings said in a report. It termed the same as a «structural positive» for the telecom sector struggling on the Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) front because of the huge investments in 5G rollout, including spectrum purchases, it said. An analysis by the rating agency revealed that the hikes will improve the telcos' blended average revenue per user (ARPU) by about 15 per cent to Rs 220 in FY25 from around Rs 191 in FY24.

India’s highest-paid bankers are from non-banks. RBI can’t do much about it—yet.
MUMBAI : India’s highest-paid banker isn’t Sashidhar Jagdishan, chief of the country’s largest private lender, HDFC Bank Ltd. That title goes not to Rajeev Jain, the CEO of Bajaj Finance Ltd, India’s largest non-bank, but to Abhay Bhutada, the recently retired chief of Pune-based Poonawalla Fincorp Ltd. Shadow banks such as Poonawalla Fincorp and Bajaj Finance have been able to shower their bosses with hefty salaries, bonuses and stock options as they reap the rewards of robust business growth.

Central spending gives a boost to liquidity, brings overnight rate 10 bps below repo
government spending after the polls has injected fresh liquidity into the banking system, bringing down overnight borrowing rates, Treasury Bill yields and, in turn, short-term financing costs for Indian companies, even as the central bank seems to be in no great hurry to lower policy rates. After being at or above the Reserve Bank of India’s repo rate of 6.50% in May and June, the overnight weighted average call rate (WACR) has averaged 6.39% so far in July, more than 10 basis points lower than the benchmark policy rate, an analysis of daily central bank data showed. One basis point is a hundredth of a percentage point. The key driver of the evident shift in banking system liquidity to a surplus from a protracted deficit has been a flow of government expenditure — of about Rs 1 lakh crore — over the past few days. “Government cash surplus (Centre and states), which had peaked at Rs 5.1 lakh crore as of May 24 after the RBI dividend, has reduced to Rs 2.1 lakh crore as of July 11, with a pick-up in the pace of government expenditure,” said Gaura Sengupta, chief economist, IDFC First Bank.

What is Form 16? How to download Form 16 to file income tax return (ITR)
Form 16 is a certificate issued by an employer under section 203 of the Income-tax Act, 1961, which pertains to the deduction of tax at source (TDS) from the income earned as salary during a financial year. The employer provides it to show the tax deducted from the employee's salary, which is then deposited with the government against the employee's PAN. The TDS certificate contains a comprehensive overview of the salary amount disbursed to the employee and the tax that has been deducted from it. Additionally, if an employee chooses the old income tax regime and presents investment proofs, this information will be included in Form 16. The employer must give the employee their Form 16 if the employer withholds taxes from the employee's salary.
