ET Analysis: India must leverage US President’s tariff flexibility clause
non-reciprocal trading arrangement. Here, India has an early mover advantage that it needs to drive home at the earliest. India is among the few countries with which the Trump Administration has already announced and progressed talks on a trade deal. It’s probably the first country to which the USTR has sent delegation to negotiate and by all accounts, the conversation is now at advanced stage. From Trump’s perspective the modification authority clause — Section 4 of the tariff order under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act – provides him with an effective bargaining chip in a trade negotiation. It allows to him raise tariffs and deploy other remedies in case a trading partner were to deploy retaliatory measures. At the same time, it gives him the power to reduce tariffs or limit the scope of duties imposed if the country aligns itself to the US on economic and security matters. Israel, which too has got hit with 17 per cent tariffs despite being among the first to officially cut duties for the US, falls in this category and is likely to benefit from this clause. As for India, a trade deal will open the doors for Trump to make that exception, counting on the overall strategic convergence between both countries across a range of national security issues including critical and sensitive technologies. More importantly, it’s not also in US interests to allow tariffs to impact cooperation in other areas like defence, space and nuclear sectors.

The tech fantasy that powers AI is running on fumes
tech! That is what I want to say every time someone asks me, «What about AI?» with the breathless anticipation of a boy who thinks this is the summer he finally gets to touch a boob. I'm far from a Luddite. It is precisely because I use new technology that I know mid when I see it. Academics are rarely good stand-ins for typical workers. But the mid-technology revolution is an exception. It has come for us first. Some of it has even come from us, genuinely exciting academic inventions and research science that could positively contribute to society. But what we've already seen in academia is that the use cases for artificial intelligence across every domain of work and life have started to get silly really fast. Most of us aren't using AI to save lives faster and better. We are using AI to make mediocre improvements, such as emailing more. Even the most enthusiastic papers about AI's power to augment white-collar work have struggled to come up with something more exciting than «A brief that once took two days to write will now take two hours!»

China discovers major new oilfield off Shenzhen
The Huizhou 19-6 oilfield lies about 170 kilometres (100 miles) from Shenzhen in south China's Guangdong Province, Beijing's Xinhua news agency said. Test drilling has yielded a daily production of 413 barrels of crude oil and 68,000 cubic meters of natural gas, the CNOOC said. The state-owned oil giant's CEO, Zhou Xinhuai, hailed «successive breakthroughs in oil and gas exploration in the eastern waters of the South China Sea». CNOOC «has discovered 100-million-ton oilfields for two consecutive years, which creates a new growth pole for the continuous growth in offshore oil and gas production,» he added.

However, the net £3.2bn savings generated from cuts to welfare budgets, which the OBR said will impact three million families in the UK, coupled with the boost from planning reforms and reduction in day-to-day spending, are expected to offset thi...
