Boeing seems unable to keep up with its rival Airbus
When Boeing was building a seemingly unassailable position in commercial aviation in the 1960s and 70s, passengers’ faith in its relentless focus on quality inspired the slogan “If it ain’t Boeing, I ain’t going." After the latest calamity to befall the company—the in-flight blowout of a 737 Max door plug of a plane operated by Alaska Airlines that fortunately wasn’t fatal, unlike the two crashes involving 737 Max jets in 2018 and 2019— aviation needs a new catchphrase that encapsulates Boeing’s shattered safety reputation and the ascendance of its sole big rival. This flier suggests, “If it ain’t Airbus, the regular bus will do just fine." In the wake of the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines disasters, I wrote that the Airbus-Boeing duopoly had become “extremely unbalanced." At this point, I’m running out of hyperbole to describe the starkly diverging fortunes of the two aircraft makers.

Mint Explainer: How have regulators and airlines responded to the Boeing crisis?
New Delhi: American aircraft manufacturer Boeing is under scrutiny once again for its 737 MAX aircraft after part of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max-9's fuselage blew out in midair on 5 January, forcing an emergency landing. India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) immediately ordered three Indian airlines to conduct a one-time inspection of emergency exits on all their Boeing 737 Max-8 aircraft out. On Monday, Boeing shared instructions with airlines for inspecting their 737 Max-9 aircraft, after US regulators grounded 171 such planes because of the Alaska Airlines incident.

Flight safety: 737 Max testing is vital
Safety checks on 39 of the 40 Boeing 737 Max aircraft being flown in India have revealed a “missing washer" in one, according to the country’s aviation regulator. All the rest were found to be in order, while the inspection of one plane was still underway. Needless to say, rectification measures have been taken.
