Income tax saving: Sold land, house or jewellery? Know how indexation benefit can help you lower your long-term capital gains
inflation has reduced the purchasing power of Rs 100 over the years. So why should you pay income tax on long-term capital gains without factoring in inflation? Rather than inflationary gain, it is fair to pay income tax only on real gain. This is why the Income Tax law allows you to take advantage of indexation. It helps you to get a discount for inflation over the current price of the asset and get the inflation-adjusted present value of your capital gains. «Indexation is a mechanism which is used to adjust the current price of a capital asset to reflect the effect of inflation on it in comparison to the date of its actual purchase. With the help of indexation, one can lower the Long-Term Capital Gain (LTCG) and corresponding tax applicable on it at the time of sale of such capital asset,» says Daizy Chawla, Managing Partner, S&A Law Offices. So, you must use indexation to your advantage and pay a lower long-term capital gains tax. However, do note that this benefit is not available for every capital asset.

HDFC Bank plans infra bond swap for securities of parent HDFC Ltd
HDFC Bank is discussing with investors and the regulator a plan through which the country's most-valued lender would buy back some of the bonds issued by the erstwhile HDFC, and replace these instruments with new infrastructure bonds to be sold to the same set of investors holding the securities. This exercise, if approved, would help HDFC Bank cut interest costs as bank infrastructure bonds have the advantage of exemptions from regulatory reserve requirements like Statutory Liquidity Ratio and Cash Reserve Ratio.

‘Mania’ could drive S&P to 6,000 before plunge, Stifel says
Stifel, Nicolaus & Co. But like prior “bubble” episodes, this one eventually has to pop too, the firm’s chief equity strategist says. Stifel’s Barry Bannister says the US stock benchmark has a shot at reaching the 6,000 mark before the end of 2024 as investors keep piling in, up from just below 5,500 Thursday. But by mid-2026, he expects the gauge to sink back to where it began this year — around the 4,800 level — erasing a fifth of its value.

Two, Nvidia has left its much-bigger rival Intel far behind in both earnings and valuations. So, is it right now open to challenges to its temporary computing monopoly? The inspection reports will also reveal the Big Five's compliance with suggestions made in the regulator's December 2023 reports that had flagged deficiencies in their work processes.
