Confidence in second BoE rate cut soars as inflation falls below 2% for first time since 2021
The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) fell to 1.7% in September, down from 2.2% in August. Inflation had reached the central bank's 2% target at the beginning of the summer, only for it to edge slightly above in the following months. According to the ONS data today (16 October), the largest detraction came from transport, especially from air fares and motor fuels, offsetting the larger contribution from food and non-alcoholic beverages. Yet core CPI remained elevated at 3.2%, although down from 3.6% in August, with CPI goods falling from -0.9% to -1.4% and services inflation from 5.6% to 4....

DGCA bars low visibility landings in Boeing 737 planes due to defect in rudder control
DGCA) has asked airlines with Boeing 737 planes not to do landings in less than 150 feet and to conduct training for their pilots for a scenario where the rudder is jammed, restricting its control. This is after the National Transport Safety Board (NTSB), the accident investigator of the US, issued an urgent safety alert last week for a potential rudder failure in the 737 aircraft. The incident was discovered after a United Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 experienced “stuck” rudder pedals while landing at Newark Liberty International Airport in February. DGCA’s advisory will not immediately impact any airline as low visibility conditions with visual range as low as 150 feet is not prevailing in the country, say experts. However, if the issue is not sorted before the foggy days of December, airlines may face challenges with some of their planes barred from operating from the Delhi Airport.

BoE's Andrew Bailey warns of market stability risk from escalating Middle East conflict
Speaking to The Guardian, governor of the Bank of England Andrew Bailey said the BoE is watching the escalating conflict in the Middle East «extremely closely» but admitted that while the bank will pull out the stops to keep the market stable things could get «really bad». Following the Israeli invasion of southern Lebanon and Iran's retaliatory missile attack this week, oil prices increased by 3% in response to concerns the conflict could obstruct crude oil flows from the Middle East. Stuck NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore welcome SpaceX capsule that'll bring them home next year
International Space Station since June welcomed their new ride home with Sunday's arrival of a SpaceX capsule. SpaceX launched the rescue mission on Saturday with a downsized crew of two astronauts and two empty seats reserved for Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams, who will return next year. The Dragon capsule docked in darkness as the two craft soared 265 miles (426 kilometers) above Botswana. NASA switched Wilmore and Williams to SpaceX following concerns over the safety of their Boeing Starliner capsule. It was the first Starliner test flight with a crew, and NASA decided the thruster failures and helium leaks that cropped up after liftoff were too serious and poorly understood to risk the test pilots' return. So Starliner returned to Earth empty earlier this month.
