According to data from the Office for National Statistics today (22 November), non-food stores sales volumes fell on the month, as retailers said uncertainty and low consumer confidence over this year's Autumn Budget impacted sales. The largest decline in retail sector volumes came from textile clothing and footwear stores, with sales falling by 3.1% from a month prior. Similarly, non-food stores sales recorded a 1.4% decline in sales in October, following a 2.3% rise in September. Hike in energy prices pushes inflation above BoE target at 2.3% in October Overall sales volumes rose...

Treasury Committee takes aim at ONS on labour force data
The concerns were raised by Meg Hillier, chair of the Treasury Committee, in a public letter to the UK Statistics Authority regarding the accuracy of the ONS' Labour Force Survey (LFS). Concerns about the validity of the LFS have dogged the data provider for years, with the LFS estimates due to be published in October 2023 suspended because of quality concerns. BoE chief economist Huw Pill slams ONS for inadequate jobs data The alarm was raised again earlier this month by the Office for Budget Responsibility's Professor David Miles who told who told the Treasury Committee on 5 Nove...

BoE's Ramsden warns of faster rate cuts in deflationary scenario
In a speech at Leeds University Business School on Wednesday (20 November), Dave Ramsden described the significant fall in headline inflation as «the main development on the UK economy over the last year». He recalled the MPC's forecast in November 2023, which predicted it would take over two years for inflation to return to the 2% target, noting it took just six months. Earlier this month the Monetary Policy Committee cut rates for the second time this year, taking the bank rate to 4.75%, and remarking in the monetary policy report that it expects inflation to rise to around 2.8% ove...

UK public sector borrowing jumps £1.6bn as Treasury reiterates repair pledge
UK borrowing – which is the difference between public sector spending and income – was £17.4bn last month, the second highest October borrowing since monthly records began in January 1993, according to data from the Office for National Statistics. The previous October high was set in 2020 in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic when levels hit £18.2bn. Hike in energy prices pushes inflation above BoE target at 2.3% in October This was also an increase on September's value, when the government borrowed £16.6bn. Last month's figures came in £1.5bn higher than the £15.1bn borrowing f...

Hike in energy prices pushes inflation above BoE target at 2.3% in October
According to data from the Office for National Statistics today (20 November), the increase was largely driven by a rise in energy prices last month, although it was partly offset by the recreation and culture sector. Core inflation increased as well to 3.3% from 3.2% a month prior, still well above the Bank of England's target of 2%, as services inflations continued to remain sticky rising to 5% from 4.9% in September. BoE's Andrew Bailey warns Budget tax hikes add 'uncertainty' for interest rate cuts Chief secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones, said: «We know that families acros...

BoE's Andrew Bailey: We must rebuild UK-EU relations as global economy fragments
Speaking at the Mansion House Financial and Professional Services dinner on Thursday (15 November), the governor urged Chancellor Rachel Reeves to «welcome opportunities to rebuild» post-Brexit relations with the continent. «Now, as I have said many times, as a public official I take no position on Brexit per se. That is important. But I do have to point out consequences. The changing trading relationship with the EU has weighed on the level of potential supply,» he said. «The impact on trade seems to be more in goods than services, that is not particularly surprising to my mind. But...

US weekly jobless claims fall; unemployment rolls shrink
unemployment benefits fell last week, suggesting the labor market continued to chug along and that the abrupt slowdown in job growth in October was an aberration. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 4,000 to a seasonally adjusted 217,000 for the week ended Nov. 9, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 223,000 claims for the latest week. Claims surged in early October amid distortions from Hurricanes Helene and Milton as a well as a strike by factory workers at Boeing, but layoffs have remained historically low, which is underpinning the economy.

BoE's Huw Pill warns inflation not tamed as 'quite sticky' wage growth persists
Following the release of labour market data from the Office for National Statistics this morning (12 November), Pill told a conference organised by Swiss bank UBS «pay growth remains quite sticky at elevated levels». Investors bet on slower pace of rate cuts from BoE as Budget stokes inflation risks These are «levels that – given the outlook for productivity growth in the UK – are hard to reconcile with the UK inflation target», the Monetary Policy Committee member argued. UK wage growth cooled less than expected in the three months to September, with annual growth in employees' a...

IndiGo working with civil aviation ministry to extend wet lease of Boeing 777 planes
IndiGo is working with the civil aviation ministry to explore the possibility of extending the wet lease of wide-body Boeing 777 planes from Turkish Airlines as the existing lease period is ending this week. Currently, IndiGo is operating two wet-leased Boeing 777 planes for flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Istanbul. These are also the only two wide-body aircraft that are in the fleet of the airline, which is India's largest carrier with a domestic market share of over 62 per cent. These aircraft were wet-leased to cater to the rising demand for international travel from India. IndiGo started operating its first wide-body Boeing 777 aircraft on the Delhi- Istanbul route from February 1, 2023, and began operating the Boeing 777 plane on the Mumbai-Istanbul route from May 17, 2023.

NASA astronauts won't say which one of them got sick after almost 8 months in space
Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt and Jeanette Epps Friday publicly discussed their spaceflight for the first time since returning from the International Space Station on Oct 25. They spent nearly eight months in orbit, longer than expected because of all the trouble with Boeing's Starliner crew capsule and rough weather, including Hurricane Milton.
