processed foods have become a convenient option for many. From ready-to-eat meals to nutrition products, different products line our shelves promising quick satisfaction. However, lurking beneath the appealing packaging are hidden dangers that can wreak havoc on our health. India's food and beverage (F&B) industry has undergone a significant change. It is crucial for businesses, policymakers, regulators, public health experts, and industry leaders to educate consumers about scientifically backed information. This is where the labelling of F&B products becomes vital in enabling consumers to make well-informed choices about their nutrition. In the maze of product labels adorning packaged foods, deciphering the fine print can be daunting. However, mastering the art of reading labels is crucial for making informed and health-conscious choices. Here's a guide on how to navigate product labels effectively:

New research reveals genetic basis for blood pressure and hypertension tisk
blood pressure and, in turn, their risk of developing hypertension, according to a new research. Genomics is the study of an individual's entire genetic makeup, including the inter-relationships between genes, which are segments forming DNA that resides inside human cells. Data from more than a million people were analysed to discover regions on the genome, including over a 100 new ones, linked to blood pressure. The international study, led by Queen Mary University of London, UK, is published in the journal Nature Genetics. «Our study found additional genomic locations that together explain a much larger part of the genetic differences in people's blood pressure. Knowing a person's risk for developing hypertension could lead to tailored treatments, which are more likely to be effective,» first author Jacob Keaton, staff scientist at the National Human Genome Research Institute's (NHGRI), US, said.

Intermittent fasting for weight loss linked to 91% increase in risk of death from heart disease: Study
fasting, a popular strategy to lose weight by limiting food intake to certain times, was called into question by a surprise finding from research presented at a medical meeting. Limiting mealtimes to a period of just eight hours a day was linked to a 91% increase in risk of death from heart disease in the study, which was released on Monday in Chicago. The American Heart Association published only an abstract, leaving scientists speculating about details of the study protocol. The study was reviewed by other experts prior to its release, according to the AHA. Lifestyle interventions aimed at weight loss have come under scrutiny as a new generation of drugs help people shed pounds. Some doctors questioned the study’s findings, saying they could have been skewed by differences — such as underlying heart health — between the fasting patients and the comparison group, whose members consumed food over a daily period of 12 to 16 hours. “Time-restricted eating is popular as a means of reducing calorie intake,” Keith Frayn, emeritus professor of human metabolism at the University of Oxford, said in a statement to the UK Science Media Center. “This work is very important in showing that we need long-term studies on the effects of this practice. But this abstract leaves many questions unanswered.”

AstraZeneca bets on licencing deals, public-private partnerships for India growth
AstraZeneca is in the process of 15 new launches in India including novel products and new indications of existing assets in two years, said Sanjeev Panchal, managing director of AstraZeneca Pharma India. «We would be doing 15 new launches starting 2023 until 2025,» he told ET. The products would be in the therapeutic segments of oncology; cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic (CVRM) diseases; respiratory and immunology; and rare diseases. Some of the new products would be biologics or monoclonal antibodies, Panchal said. To expand access to its innovative therapies, AstraZeneca is working on strategies such as public-private partnerships (PPPs) for screening and early diagnosis, entering licensing deals with India pharmaceutical companies to enhance reach, and following a country-wise or tiered pricing approach in India linked to economic indicators, ensuring the prices of the drugs are relatively lower than advanced countries, he said.

Shattering the Silence: Paving the path for cardiovascular wellness and diabetes care through the lens of Indian women
Did you know that according to studies published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the prevalence of coronary artery disease in Indian women ranges from 3% to 13% depending on the age group and has increased by almost 300% over the past two decades and the prevalence of heart failure in women in India more than doubled from 1.1% in 2000 to 2.6% in 2015? The mean age of heart attack in Indian women is 59 years, which is much lower than the average age of heart attack in women in developed countries. Hence, it is imperative to talk about heart health through the lens of gender inequities in India.
