NFO Watch: Six new mutual fund offers open this week
thematic fund, sectoral fund, liquid fund, fixed maturity plan, an index fund, and overnight fund are open for subscription. After a dry spell for a short period, the NFO market is again showing some signs of revival. Should you invest in these NFOs to maximize the returns from your mutual fund portfolio? First, find out why mutual funds launch NFOs. Mutual fund houses typically launch new schemes because they want to complete their bouquet of offerings or to increase their assets under management. Sometimes, funds may have discovered an interesting theme or idea which they think may offer an opportunity to create wealth. An investor need not bother about fund houses completing their offerings or chasing AUMs. If it’s a unique idea, you should take a closer look.

What Makes Putin and the World’s Autocrats So Resilient?
The recent mutiny in Russia revealed cracks in President Vladimir Putin’s regime and raised hopes in the West that his days in power were numbered. There are two reasons for caution: Autocrats have remarkable staying power and only rarely are replaced by a democratic government. Images of hundreds of heavily armed men rumbling in a convoy toward Moscow raised the possibility that the man who launched the Ukraine war and has dominated Russian politics for more than two decades could lose power.

Retail health insurance grew 68%, higher than any other segment: Rakesh Jain, Reliance General Insurance
The average sum insured in retail health insurance has also gone up from Rs.4 lakh to Rs.7 lakh for Reliance General Insurance in the past two years, Rakesh Jain, CEO, Reliance General Insurance tells ET Wealth. In the recent past, IRDAI has mandated several standardised products, such as those for mental health, surrogacy, etc. Are insurers facing any difficulty in implementing these? When it comes to product development, you need to have certain data to create a product and price it. Mental health plans or IVFs were never under the ambit of insurance, and the confidentiality of data meant that the insurance companies could not understand the risk and pricing.

Deepak Parekh bids adieu: Why the man who built HDFC never owned more than 1% of it
HDFC Chairman Deepak Parekh, who has announced his retirement, is one of those who are penny wise — as well as pound wise. When Parekh was doing his articleship in London after studying accountancy, he planned to celebrate his 21st birthday with three friends. He prepared the budget for the party: two shillings and six pence for each of the three guests. Shilling was a British coin one-twentieth of a pound which was discontinued in 1971. A shilling had 12 pence. In today's rupee terms, it translates to nearly 12.5 rupees for each. He told them that they could have whatever they wanted within that budget. But when drinks started flowing, Parekh's meticulous budget all went awry. He ended up with a 'grand' bill of 13 shillings. His friends had to shell out the difference, and, till date, they hold him to ransom for that party. That value of frugality and that strict measure of money stayed forever with Parekh. Unlike his birthday party budget, his home mortgage business, which he joined nearly a decade later, never went awry. At 78, when he is retiring from HDFC, it is merging with its arm HDFC Bank, turning into a Rs 1,600 crore financial behemoth, the second biggest company by market cap in India after Reliance Industries and the fourth biggest bank in the world.

How did that happen? The great fall of West Indies cricket explained
West Indies will not be part of the ODI World Cup for the first time in the history of the tournament after being eliminated from the Qualifiers — a result that plunged country's cricket to an unimaginable low, on Saturday. Coming into the do-or-die Super Six contest, West Indies, packed with some bona-fide T20 superstars, suffered an embarrassing seven-wicket defeat against Scotland after managing a modest 181 in 43.5 overs. It was an impressive show by the Scots, especially by all-rouder Brandon McMullen, who first took three wickets, and then scored a patient 69 off 106 balls to steer his side to a famous victory.
