Pegatron India's iPhone factory shutdown to go into Day 3 after fire: Sources
Apple supplier Pegatron's India iPhone factory is expected to extend into Wednesday and disruptions could last longer as authorities investigate a fire at the Taiwanese firm's only India plant, four sources said. Pegatron described the Sunday fire as a «spark incident» which caused no injuries and said has «no financial or operational impact to Pegatron Corporation», but called off all assembly shifts for Monday and Tuesday, Reuters previously reported. Four sources briefed on the matter said Wednesday shifts were also unlikely. One of them said damage was being repaired at the plant in Chengalpattu area near the southern city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu state, and in the worst case the shutdown could last the entire week. One of the sources said Apple representatives were collaborating with Pegatron after the incident. Apple and Pegatron did not respond to requests for comment. Pegatron has asked independent surveyors to assess the fire damage, a fifth source said. The disruptions are the latest to impact Apple suppliers in India, a country where the U.S.

Bengaluru Bandh against Cauvery water release to Tamil Nadu evokes partial response
Bengaluru bandh called by various organisations over the Cauvery river water dispute evoked partial response on Tuesday with most of the public services functioning normally. Farmers and Kannada organisations, backed by the opposition BJP and JD(S) had made the call for shutdown in protest against the release of Cauvery water to neighbouring Tamil Nadu. Normal life was affected in the city as fewer people ventured out. 'Karnataka Jala Samrakshana Samiti,' an umbrella outfit of farmers' associations and other organisations led by farmer leader Kuruburu Shanthakumar, has given the call for today's dawn-to-dusk (6 am to 6 pm) Bengaluru bandh. Shanthakumar and other leaders of the 'Karnataka Jala Samrakshana Samiti were detained by the police at the Mysuru Bank circle, as they were trying to hold a protest march towards Town Hall. Several activists of Kannada organisations were also whisked away by the police at Town Hall, as they gathered there to stage a protest. Farmers' leaders and Kannada activists hit out at the government for allegedly using police force to curtail the protests and bandh. City police have taken adequate security measures to respond to any violence that may happen during the protests.

Mumbai's iconic Hanging Gardens, a beloved 136-year-old landmark, might soon bear the brunt of infrastructure development within the city. P Velrasu, the additional municipal commissioner in charge of projects, told TOI, «The plan is to demolish and reconstruct the reservoir over a period of seven years.» This ambitious project is expected to necessitate the dismantling of the entire landscaped area and the relocation of approximately 350 trees to an adjacent plot. In response to vehement objections from local residents, Mumbai's guardian minister and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), MP Lodha, has convened a public meeting scheduled for Tuesday to address the concerns.

Archaeologists unearth Roman-era cemetery dated 2,000 years in Gaza
Gaza Strip have found dozens of ancient graves, including two sarcophagi made of lead, in a Roman-era cemetery — a site dating back some 2,000 years that archaeologists describe as the largest cemetery discovered in Gaza. Workers came upon the site last year during the construction of an Egyptian-funded housing project near Jabaliya, in the northern Gaza Strip. Since then, crews have worked to excavate the 2,700-square-meter (2/3 acre) site with the support of French experts. Now, what was once an inconspicuous construction lot — surrounded by a grove of nondescript apartment buildings — has become a gold mine for archaeologists looking to understand more about the Gaza Strip. Gaza, a coastal enclave home to some 2.3 million people, has a rich history stemming from its location on ancient trade routes between Egypt and the Levant.
