FIDE World Junior Chess Championship: Indian chess players visa delayed by Mexican embassy
FIDE World Junior Chess Championship with some of the players yet to get their visas to travel to Mexico city for the prestigious tournament beginning on Wednesday. According to sources, the players are scheduled to leave for the Mexican capital on Monday, and the delay has resulted in a lack of clarity and uncertainty regarding their participation in the global event. Speaking to PTI, FIDE Advisory Board Chairman Bharat Singh Chauhan said, «Despite all the best effort and clearance from the Indian government, we are yet to receive the clearance from the Mexican embassy, which has resulted in the delay of visas being issued. »Tomorrow (Monday), the players are scheduled to leave, and the matter has been kept hanging till the last day, with no clarity if the visas would indeed be issued on time." According to the data sheet in possession of PTI, five of the Indian players, who are being funded by the Government of India, are yet to receive their visas. The players affected are Vrashank Chouhan, Arun Kataria, Bhagyashree Patil, Prraneeth Vuppala and Femil Chelladurai, along with coaches Pravind Thipsay M and Kiran Agrawal. «It is extremely frustrating since all the Indian players are looking forward to participating in the tournament, while the contingent is also one of the strong favourites to come out on top,» Chauhan said. «The competition is being organised by Mexico's chess federation with the approval of the Mexican government, and it should be their responsibility to ensure that the embassy gives all the necessary clearance to issue the visa on time. »The Indian authorities have done their part, and it's all up to them (Mexican authorities) now.

One week after Libya flood, aid effort gains pace
Derna, sweeping thousands to their deaths, the international aid effort gained pace on Sunday to help the grieving survivors. Search-and-rescue teams wearing face masks and protective suits kept up the grim search for any survivors who may still be trapped in the mud-caked wasteland of smashed buildings, crushed cars and uprooted trees. Traumatised residents, 30,000 of whom are now homeless in Derna alone, are in dire need of clean water, food, shelter and basic supplies amid a growing risk of cholera, diarrhoea, dehydration and malnutrition, UN agencies warn. «In this city, every single family has been affected,» said one resident, Mohammad al-Dawali. Seir Mohammed Seir, a member of the security forces, spoke of a three-month-old girl who lived through the tragedy: «Her entire family died, she was the only one who survived.» Emergency response teams and relief goods have been deployed from France, Iran, Malta, Russia, Tunisia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, with more on the way from multiple other European and Arab nations. The aid effort has been hampered by the political division of Libya, which was thrown into war and chaos after a 2011 NATO-backed uprising led to the overthrow and killing of veteran dictator Moamer Kadhafi. The oil-rich North African country now remains split between two rival governments — a UN-backed administration in the capital Tripoli, and one based in the disaster-hit east. Amid the chaos, the true death toll remained unknown, with untold numbers feared swept into the sea. The health minister of the eastern administration, Othman Abdeljalil, has said that 3,252 people were confirmed dead in Derna, where corpses wrapped in blankets and in body bags have lined squares and streets. WHO chief pushes China for 'full access' to determine COVID's origins: Financial Times
World Health Organization urged Beijing to offer more information on the origins of COVID-19 and is ready to send a second team to probe the matter, the Financial Times reported on Sunday. «We're pressing China to give full access, and we are asking countries to raise it during their bilateral meetings — to urge Beijing to co-operate,» WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told the newspaper. The WHO chief's comments come as health authorities and pharmaceutical companies across the world have been racing to update vaccines to combat newer emerging coronavirus variants. Ghebreyesus has for long been pressing China to share its information about the origins of COVID-19, saying that until that happened all hypotheses remained on the table. The virus was first identified in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019, with many suspecting it spread in a live animal market before fanning out around the world and killing nearly 7 million people.

Maharashtra: Name change of Aurangabad, Osmanabad comes into force
Osmanabad Revenue Divisions have now been officially renamed as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Dharashiv Revenue Divisions, respectively. The Maharashtra government issued a notification to change the names of the Aurangabad and Osmanabad Revenue Divisions to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Dharashiv Revenue Divisions respectively. Both the districts are part of the Marathwada region. Suggestions and objections sought a few months ago have been considered and the decision to change the names at the sub-division, village, taluka and district levels has been taken, the notification issued by the Revenue Department on Friday night said. The decision to rename Aurangabad and Osmanabad was taken in the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government's last cabinet meeting chaired by the then chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on June 29, 2022, just before he resigned. In July last year, the Eknath Shinde government gave the cabinet approval to rename Aurangabad and Osmanabad cities as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Dharashiv respectively. In February this year, the central government had approved the renaming of both districts. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) approved the proposal, saying that the central government had «no objection» to changing the names of both districts of Maharashtra.
