At least $1 trillion in investment is needed to achieve housing affordability in Canada, and the private sector has a key role to play, according to a new study by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

Yesterday marked the start of the final quarter of 2023—a year distinguished by a remarkable stock market recovery amid a continued selloff in the bond market.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 114.51 points, or 0.34%, at the open to 33,318.84. The S&P 500 opened lower by 18.64 points, or 0.43%, at 4,269.75, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 78.09 points, or 0.59%, to 13,229.68 at the opening bell.

Canada’s top banking regulator is increasing scrutiny on how the country’s largest financial institutions are managing their commercial real estate portfolios amid rising interest rates that are creating vulnerabilities in the sector.

gold closed with a weekly gain of 0.10% at $1,925 and was up 0.31% on Friday. The week ending September 22 was marked with crucial monetary policy decisions of three key central banks — Federal Reserve, Bank of England and Bank of Japan. The US Federal Reserve, in a widely expected move, skipped a rate hike at its FOMC monetary policy meeting concluded on September 20. However, the Federal Reserve's stance was hawkish as the Central Bank increased the projected rate for 2024 to 5.10% from 4.60%, which implies a rate cut of 50 bps as against the previous estimate of a 100 bps rate cut.

The broad-based S&P 500 finished at 4,320.06, down 0.2 percent for the day and 2.9 percent for the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.3 percent to 33,963.84, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index lost 0.1 percent at 13,211.81.
