The S&P 500 opened lower by 4.86 points, or 0.11%, at 4,269.65, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 49.48 points, or 0.38%, to 13,043.37 at the opening bell.

Real estate stocks gained 2.2%. Euro zone banks surged 2%, on UniCredit’s 4.7% rally. Canada stocks pared its earlier gains to end down on Wednesday.

Global market update: US stock market edged higher on Friday on resilience in the national economy even though investors await the key US inflation data expected next week. Dow Jones index added 0.22 per cent whereas tech heavy weight Nasdaq added 0.09 per cent. S&P 500 index gained 0.14 per cent.

The Federal Reserve may very well be done hiking rates for now, but US stocks still face a pullback from the risk of a hard economic landing, according to Bank of America Corp. strategists.

jobless claims for the week ended August 26 fell at 228,000. Shares of Salesforce climbed 3% after its upbeat revenue forecasts. Broadcom rose 3.4% and Intel gained 1.8%.

Real estate stocks added 1.4%. Asia In Asian stock markets, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index climbed 2% at 18,484.03. China's Shanghai Composite jumped 1.2% at 3,135.89.
