NEW DELHI : The Union government is discussing a proposal for state-run cooperatives to procure maize, or corn, from farmers from the next Rabi season to meet its ambitious ethanol-blended fuel target, a top official said. If the proposal goes through, the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (Nafed) and the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation Of India Ltd (NCCF) will procure maize from farmers at state-set guaranteed prices, Union food and public distribution secretary Sanjeev Chopra told Mint in an interview. Currently, biofuels such as ethanol are made primarily from sugarcane and grains such as rice and maize.

UCBs form a critical layer of the financial system of the country. Despite the sector's consistent 3-4% presence in the overall banking business, its significance should not be underestimated, he said.

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Pralhad Joshi is set to convene a meeting of the floor leaders of various political parties in both Houses of Parliament ahead of the Budget Session. Before each parliamentary session, it is a standard procedure for leaders of various political parties to outline the issues they intend to raise, and the government provides them with a preview of its agenda while seeking their cooperation. It will be a short session this time, between January 31 and February 9, with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman set to table the interim budget ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. IT, healthcare, tourism and education have been identified as key fields where India and Kazakhstan can expand partnership, according to Indian Ambassador to Kazakhstan T.V. Nagendra Prasad.

Canada's outgoing National Security Advisor Jody Thomas on Saturday emphasised that India is cooperating in the investigation of the killing of India-designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, and called the changing relationship an «evolution», as reported by Canada-based CTV News. Thomas said that Canada has «made advancements in that relationship.» In an interview with CTV's Question Period host Vassy Kapelos which airs this Sunday, Thomas said that her discussions with her Indian counterpart have been fruitful.
