Rise of EVs: The urgency of climate action
climate change are evident through increased floods, droughts, heat waves and other extreme weather events across the globe. Scientists warn that if immediate action is not taken, the damage caused may become irreversible by 2030. One of the major contributors to global warming is greenhouse gas emissions from traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. However, there is still hope if we accelerate the adoption of zero-emission electric vehicles. The Auto Industry's Electric Shift

Oil prices ease on strong US dollar, mixed global economic news
Crude prices eased about 1% on Friday on worries that global oil demand growth could be reduced by a strong U.S. dollar and negative economic news from some parts of the world. Prices declined despite signs of improving U.S. oil demand and falling fuel inventories that boosted crude prices to a seven-week high a day earlier.

BJP's 'corruption' is weakening country: Priyanka Gandhi slams govt over exam paper leaks
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the government over exam paper leaks, saying the issue has become a national problem under the BJP rule which has «ruined the future» of crores of youth. The Congress general secretary's attack comes amid outcry against alleged irregularities in the medical entrance examination NEET and also the cancellation of the UGC-NET examination on Wednesday a day after it was held, citing compromised integrity of the test. In a post in Hindi on X, Priyanka Gandhi said, «In the last five years, papers of 43 recruitment exams have been leaked in the country. Paper leak has become a national problem of our country under BJP rule which has ruined the future of crores of youth so far.» «India is the youngest country in the world. We have the largest youth population. Instead of making these youth skilled and capable, the BJP government is making them weak,» she alleged.

Congress’ Praveen Chakravarty backtracks over criticism of Karnataka government hiring BCG, issues apology for “private opinion”
Praveen Chakravarty on Friday apologised for his post on social media platform X, criticising Karnataka Congress government's decision to hire the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to help with suggestions to boost state revenue. Chakravarty, chairman of Professionals' Congress & Data Analytics, had faced backlash from his party after his dig at the government was echoed by the opposition BJP. Posting a retraction on X, Chakravarty said his comments reflected his private opinion, and weren’t intended to be a criticism of the Karnataka government. “I posted my private opinion on the broader culture of outsourcing core political & policy functions to outside consultants with no ‘skin in the game.’ It’s an issue that is debated widely in research circles & my comment was purely academic…I have spoken with & expressed my apologies for causing inadvertent harm to the leadership in Karnataka,” he wrote. The Siddaramaiah-regime roped in the BCG earlier this week, under pressure to find funding to fulfil its guarantee programmes, which will cost the state around Rs 52,000 crore this fiscal year. The government has already hiked taxes on fuel, liquor, and property, and is said to be considering further rate revisions to mobilise revenue. The guarantee programmes themselves have come under fire after the party managed to win just nine out of 28 seats in the state in the recent general elections.

Union Budget 2024: Here is how revenue, fiscal and primary deficit impacts the Indian economy
Revenue Deficit: When the government has a shortage of enough funds to maintain its day-to-day affairs is known as revenue deficit. This happens when total revenue expenditure surpasses total revenue receipts, leading to a revenue deficit. To work through the revenue deficit, the government often resorts to borrowings and divestments to make up for this gap in revenue, alongside the introduction of new or increasing taxes. Fiscal Deficit The fiscal deficit is the negative balance that happens when the Centre spends more money than it receives. The number is one of the most important figure that is observed during the Budget. The size of the deficit may affect growth, price stability, cost of production, and inflation. Additionally, in case of high fiscal deficit, a country's rating is also impacted.

Pre-Budget meeting with FM: Tax sops, higher capex, stable tax regime top industry wishlist
Tax incentives, an increase in capital expenditure, fiscal consolidation, enhanced ease of doing business, and a stable long-term tax regime are among the key suggestions industry and financial institutions made in their pre-budget consultations with finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) said its president Sanjiv Puri suggested a 25% increase in capex spending over the revised estimate of FY24 and relief in income tax to boost consumption. CII also suggested setting up a Green Transition (Mitigation and Adaptation) Fund for which multiple sources of funding could be tapped and would facilitate the availability of capital at a lower cost, it said in a statement.

Key EV battery material can come from a surprising source: Methane
lithium-ion batteries that power everything from electric cars to smartphones. While China is the world’s top producer and exporter of the crystalline carbon, there’s been a push to grow a US supply chain. Oakland-based startup Molten Industries is working to build it by relying on something that’s cheap and abundant in the US: natural gas. The company has developed a specialized technique to break methane into graphite and hydrogen, the latter of which can be used as a source of clean energy. The effort is funded in part by a $25 million Series A financing round led by Bill Gates’s Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV). “This is at the intersection of two really important climate tech theme areas for us at Breakthrough: making batteries scaleable and more cost-effective to drive EV sales to grow, and on the other side, low-cost clean hydrogen,” said BEV Managing Director David Danielson.
