COST UPS Waves Research War Courts Russia is storing up a crime wave when its war on Ukraine ends
Russia has sent so many men to join its war in Ukraine that crime levels in the country fell soon after the invasion began. Now their return is starting to unleash a wave of offending. Crimes committed by servicemen that aren’t linked to the war increased by more than 20% last year, according to data from Russia’s Supreme Court. While the overall numbers are still small and many returning servicemembers don’t go onto commit offenses, there was a jump in cases of violent crimes as well as thefts and drug-related transgressions. The figures exclude crimes involving tens of thousands of convicts released from jail to join the war under a program set up by the late Wagner mercenary group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin. COST Aware cover International orienteering Income tax saving: Sold land, house or jewellery? Know how indexation benefit can help you lower your long-term capital gains
inflation has reduced the purchasing power of Rs 100 over the years. So why should you pay income tax on long-term capital gains without factoring in inflation? Rather than inflationary gain, it is fair to pay income tax only on real gain. This is why the Income Tax law allows you to take advantage of indexation. It helps you to get a discount for inflation over the current price of the asset and get the inflation-adjusted present value of your capital gains. «Indexation is a mechanism which is used to adjust the current price of a capital asset to reflect the effect of inflation on it in comparison to the date of its actual purchase. With the help of indexation, one can lower the Long-Term Capital Gain (LTCG) and corresponding tax applicable on it at the time of sale of such capital asset,» says Daizy Chawla, Managing Partner, S&A Law Offices. So, you must use indexation to your advantage and pay a lower long-term capital gains tax. However, do note that this benefit is not available for every capital asset.

markets COST Align Sustainability WhatsApp social Budget 2024: What is a Populist Budget and why is it controversial?
populist budget is a fiscal plan tailored to resonate with the general public by offering immediate benefits or addressing popular concerns through measures like tax cuts, increased social spending, or subsidies. Examples include farm loan waivers, higher crop prices, and tax reductions above lower brackets. While «populist» isn't inherently negative, such budgets draw criticism for prioritizing short-term gains over long-term stability. They can lead to unsustainable fiscal policies, increasing deficits and national debt. Critics argue they're often crafted for political expediency, aimed at gaining votes rather than sound economic management. Promises made can be unrealistic, lacking clear funding mechanisms, posing future financial challenges. Financial markets may react adversely to perceived fiscal irresponsibility, raising government borrowing costs and undermining currency value. Inflation risks rise from measures like monetary expansion or subsidies, eroding purchasing power and economic stability. Benefits may disproportionately favor certain groups, deepening social and economic disparities.
