Anurag Kashyap, known for his candid opinions, recently addressed issues of racism and hypocrisy prevalent in Bollywood. He has been vocal about various aspects of the film industry, ranging from the lack of support for independent films to the rising costs associated with actors. In a recent interview with Janice Sequeira, Kashyap highlighted how the industry perceives talent and individuals based on stereotypes.
Kashyap emphasized that the industry often overlooks genuine talent, focusing instead on superficial aspects like skin color or background. He mentioned actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Pankaj Tripathi, and Manoj Bajpayee, stating, “This industry doesn’t respect people. They think that Nawazuddin is dark-skinned, Pankaj Tripathi is normal, Manoj Bajpayee is a ‘gaonwala (villager)’… That’s how they view people. They think if these people can become stars, so can they. They think that I can make anybody a star; I can’t. They don’t realise that these actors are genuinely talented artists. I’ve only made films with them; I haven’t made their life.”
He clarified that his role as a filmmaker does not involve creating stars but rather collaborating with talented artists.
Regarding the rising costs in Bollywood, Kashyap attributed the trend to producers and agents. He expressed concern about how this trend has led to inflated entourage costs for actors while neglecting other essential crew members like assistants and technicians.
