Why Amtrak is attempting to revive the Texas Central bullet train
The U.S., despite decades of research and studies, remains without authentic high-speed rail options. Since 1987, investors have attempted to introduce bullet train service to Texas. In 2014, a group organized under the name Texas Central launched the most recent attempt to connect Dallas to Houston with a bullet train that travels more than 200 miles per hour, shortening a three and a half hour drive to a 90-minute train ride. «You cannot do that in a car,» said Andy Byford, senior vice president of high-speed rail programs at Amtrak.

Industry backs House of Lords call to reform 'misleading' investment trust cost disclosure
In a letter to The Times, Sharon Bowles, Ros Altmann, Bryn Davies and John Baron argued that UK investment companies have been facing a «deepening crisis» over the last two years. They said investment trusts have been «shunned» by investors and platforms because of EU regulation, as they remains on the UK statute book, despite not applying to any listed investment companies in Europe. FCA sets out temporary measures to address investment trust cost disclosure concerns «Under UK interpretation, investors are told that management charges are an additional cost, which is misleading,» ...

Will oppose CAA if it is discriminatory and aims at usurping people's rights: Mamata Banerjee
Mamata Banerjee on Monday said she would fiercely oppose the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) if she found it to be discriminatory against groups of people living in India and if it curtailed their existing citizenship rights in any manner. Speaking at a hurriedly convened press conference from the state secretariat, Nabanna, barely minutes before the CAA rules were officially notified by the Centre, Banerjee said this was her «primary response» based on media reports that the announcement was likely to be made soon. Banerjee stated she would offer her detailed opinion on CAA on Tuesday after thoroughly going through the notification and the finalised rules. She asked, «Why do this only days before the Lok Sabha polls are scheduled to be announced? Why did the Centre have to wait for four years to notify the law after it was passed in Parliament?

AI Will Transform One of Corporate Tech’s Biggest Cost Areas—Actual Savings TBD
Generative artificial intelligence promises to make setting up and integrating new corporate software systems much faster, and the contractors companies typically pay to do the job could see huge efficiency gains. However, some chief information officers fear these contractors, called systems integrators, will see bottom-line savings from tools such as coding assistants—which contractors say can speed up some tasks by 50%—while charging the companies the same rate. “Am I getting those savings? Are they just getting a better market?" said Marc Kermisch, chief digital and information officer at agricultural machinery and construction equipment provider CNH Industrial.

Demand for UK staff declines at fastest rate in over three years
In their latest UK jobs report, compiled by S&P Global, the firms found the slowdown in hiring and redundancies drove «further marked increases» in candidate availability while pay pressures abated. The number of permanent placements also fell, mostly due to «ongoing economic uncertainty and hesitancy» to commit to new hires, whereas temporary billings dropped to the steepest rate since mid-2020. Rates of starting pay for both permanent and temporary workers have increased, in a bid to address the ongoing cost of living crisis as well as to land highly-skilled candidates. US jobs d...
