Israel-Hamas war: ‘Ignoring human costs could…’ Obama warns Israel on actions in Gaza. See full statement here
It’s been 17 days since Hamas launched its horrific attack against Israel, killing over 1,400 Israeli citizens, including defenseless women, children and the elderly. In the aftermath of such unspeakable brutality, the U.S. government and the American people have shared in the grief of families, prayed for the return of loved ones, and rightly declared solidarity with the Israeli people. As I stated in an earlier post, Israel has a right to defend its citizens against such wanton violence, and I fully support President Biden’s call for the United States to support our long-time ally in going after Hamas, dismantling its military capabilities, and facilitating the safe return of hundreds of hostages to their families. But even as we support Israel, we should also be clear that how Israel prosecutes this fight against Hamas matters. In particular, it matters — as President Biden has repeatedly emphasized — that Israel’s military strategy abides by international law, including those laws that seek to avoid, to every extent possible, the death or suffering of civilian populations. Upholding these values is important for its own sake — because it is morally just and reflects our belief in the inherent value of every human life. Upholding these values is also vital for building alliances and shaping international opinion — all of which are critical for Israel’s long-term security. This is an enormously difficult task. War is always tragic, and even the most carefully planned military operations often put civilians at risk. As President Biden noted during his recent visit to Israel, America itself has at times fallen short of our higher values when engaged in war, and in the aftermath of 9/11, the U.S. government wasn’t

Crude oil deficit to high inflation: How can the Israel-Hamas war impact Indian economy? — Explained
Also Read: From high inflation to import bill - the domino effect of rising crude oil prices on Indian economy With major oil producers Saudi Arabia and Russia announcing oil supply cuts of a combined 1.3 million barrels per day (mbpd) till the end of the year, the global economy already faces an oil market deficit. Now, with oil prices hovering above the $90 per barrel-mark, the escalation of the conflict towards other Middle Eastern oil producers is concerning and requires careful monitoring, especially given the global economy's 'higher for longer' interest rate scenario. The oil supply is unlikely to be threatened unless the issue expands to other nations in the region and becomes a proxy conflict between the US and Iran.

Indian insurance companies cancel coverage for war damage
Indian insurance companies, including HDFC Ergo, have made a significant decision to cancel coverage for damage resulting from strikes, riots, civil commotions, lockouts, vandalism, and sabotage in the Israel/Gaza/Lebanon region due to the ongoing war. This move is aimed at mitigating potential risks associated with war-related activities. While this will have an impact for marine cargo insurance policies, which is important for businesses involved in shipping and transporting goods across the Israel/Gaza/Lebanon region, insurance companies generally take such steps to avoid increase in reinsurance rates. «Insurance companies have cited concerns about rising reinsurance costs as a driving force behind this directive,» said an executive at an insurance intermediary.

Debt not a concern, focus is on capacity expansion: JSW Steel
JSW Steel as the company's financial ratios remain healthy and it invests in expansion, joint managing director Jayant Acharya said. The Mumbai-based steelmaker has a consolidated net debt of ₹69,195 crore as of September 30, growing more than 5% year-on-year and almost 4% sequentially. «I don't think debt is a concern at all,» Acharya told ET in an interview. «Our cash position and undrawn lines are also quite healthy.» JSW Steel's net debt to Ebitda ratio stood at 2.52 at the end of the September quarter. While the latest numbers for peers are not released yet, as of March 31, Tata Steel and Jindal Steel and Power (JSP) had net debt to Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization (Ebitda) ratios of 2 and 0.7 compared to JSW Steel's 3.6. Acharya said the company's debt ratios were in a comfortable position. «We do not see any pressure because of the debt on our brownfield expansions or any kind of acquisition which makes structural or economic sense to us,» he said. The stock of JSW Steel closed 2.9% lower on Monday at ₹747.9 on the BSE.

Stocks plunge on US bond yields surge, escalating Israel conflict
MUMBAI : Indian stocks plunged on concerns over the impact of rising US bond yields, the widening Israel-Hamas conflict, and the pressure on profitability posed by potentially higher crude oil prices. The decline was fuelled by widespread selling by retail and affluent investors across small- and mid-cap stocks, which had previously outperformed their large-cap counterparts. The Nifty and Sensex fell by more than a percent each, breaching key supports, while the Nifty Midcap 150 and the Nifty Smallcap 250 indices slumped 2.7% and 3.79% each.

MicroStrategy's Debt Dilemma: A Balancing Act Between Bonds and Bitcoin
The behavior of MicroStrategy in borrowing money to purchase Bitcoin has stirred quite a controversy. Adam Cochran, a partner at CEHV and a known figure in the crypto space, recently dissected the precarious financial position of MicroStrategy, a company headed by Michael Saylor and known for its large Bitcoin holdings. Cochran outlined the company's obligations regarding its 2025 and 2028 convertible notes in a series of tweets on October 9, 2023. The notes have pull forward provisions on liquidity, allowing them to be moved to 2025. With a forward of $120 million in revenue against costs of approximately $188 million, MicroStrategy still faces $36 million in coupon payments on its debt.

Ethereum Foundation Suffered from MEV Bot Attack in Eth Selling
The recent exploit faced by the Ethereum Foundation on the decentralized finance (DeFi) platform Uniswap V3 casts a spotlight on the burgeoning issue of Sandwich attacks orchestrated by MEV (Miner Extractable Value) Bots within the blockchain and cryptocurrency domain. According to data unveiled by EigenPhi and shared by WuBlockchain, during a transaction that occurred at 16:18 UTC+8, the Ethereum Foundation endeavored to sell 1,700 ETH on Uniswap V3. However, this transaction was exploited by an MEV Bot, resulting in a loss of $9,101 for the Ethereum Foundation, while the MEV Bot was able to secure a profit of $4,060 after deducting the cost. The malevolent MEV Bot, denoted as (0x00…6B40), tactically capitalized on the transaction, shedding light on the imperative need for fortified security measures to avert such financial predations in the future.
