BJP hopeful of one-nation-one-election ballast to its poll prospects
BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's big move to push through his 'one-nation-one-election' concept promises to be the big ticket idea which can disrupt conventional calculations and allow it to frame the upcoming Lok Sabha polls along helpful lines as the party believes the issue has the potential to catch popular imagination. The government's decision on Friday to form a committee under former president Ram Nath Kovind to explore the feasibility of simultaneous elections promises to turn the matter, which has long animated the prime minister, into a weighty political plank in the run-up to five state assembly polls followed by the all-important Lok Sabha elections. Coming as it does a day after the government announced a «special session» of Parliament between September 18-22, the development has fuelled buzz about the possibility of early Lok Sabha polls, even though no official agenda for the legislature's meeting has been put out so far. Despite uncertainty about how the issue will pan out and if the government will take it up during the session, most BJP leaders sounded confident about its implications for the party. With the party's performance in state polls often inferior to its show in Lok Sabha elections, its leaders are of the view that simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly polls will result in overarching national issues and 'Modi factor' to play a bigger role, stripping regional agenda and leadership of some of their sway. Generally, it is the regional parties, and not the main opposition Congress, which have proved more resilient and successful in fighting the BJP.

Nobel body reverses invitation policy; Russia, Belarus, Iran and far-right leader are welcome
Nobel Foundation that administers the prestigious awards, has reversed its invitation policy and invited Russia, Belarus and Iran, as well as the leader of a far-right Swedish party, who had previously been banned. Vidar Helgesen, the executive director of the private foundation said in a statement that there was a global trend in which «dialogue between those with differing views is being reduced.» To counter that, he said, «We are now broadening our invitations to celebrate and understand the Nobel Prize and the importance of free science, free culture and free, peaceful societies.» The foundation said that invitation for the 2023 events was extended to all countries with diplomatic missions in Sweden and Norway and parties «that have parliamentary representation via democratic elections,» adding that «this common approach promotes opportunities to convey the important messages of the Nobel Prize to everyone, and in future this practice will be common to the entire organisation.» Last year, the diplomatic envoys of Russia and Belarus were barred from attending the glittery prize ceremonies and banquets, which always take place on December 10, because of the war in Ukraine, and the ambassador of Iran was also excluded because of «the serious and escalating situation» in the country. All the Nobel Prizes are handed out in Stockholm other than the Nobel Peace Prize, which is awarded in Oslo. The foundation also extended the invitation to the Sweden Democrats party leader Jimmie Akesson who declined it, saying on Facebook that «unfortunately I'm busy that day.» Swedish political party leaders are traditionally invited to the banquet but Akesson, who heads a nationalist party with far-right roots, has been snubbed in the

Common Minimum Programme will be INDIA bloc's face, countdown for BJP's fall has begun: Stalin
M K Stalin on Friday urged partners of the opposition bloc INDIA to immediately hammer out a Common Minimum Programme and asserted it would be the face of the alliance. Stalin said the countdown for removing the BJP from the corridors of power has begun and he thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for becoming what he called the «publication (publicity) officer» for the opposition INDIA alliance. «There are no achievements in the nine years of the BJP regime. Day by day this government is becoming unpopular whereas the INDIA alliance is becoming popular.» Addressing the opposition meet in Mumbai, Stalin said immediately, a coordination committee should be set up and a CMP must be prepared. «That (CMP) will be the face of the INDIA alliance. The BJP regime has ruined the country in several ways. It (CMP) must present a road map to the people spelling out what we intend doing to undo it .» The INDIA alliance should identify itself with policies and ideals required to usher in democracy by trouncing and dislodging an autocratic regime and such ideals must head the opposition bloc.

INDIA alliance will fight 'mitra parivarvad', says Uddhav after oppn conclave in Mumbai
UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray on Friday asserted the INDIA bloc will fight and defeat «mitra parivarvad», an oblique reference to crony capitalism, in the country as the opposition grouping wrapped up its two-day conclave in Mumbai. Speaking at a press conference organised after the end of the third meeting of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), Thackeray, who hosted the gathering, said the bloc consisting of more than two dozen political outfits is a coalition of patriotic parties ranged against «mitra parivarvad». «When elections come there is slogan of 'sabka saath sabka vikas (togetherness of all, development for all)...but after elections are over it is sabko laath and mitron ka vikas (development of friends by ignoring others). We will not allow this,» said the former Maharashtra CM. Opposition parties have often accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of indulging in crony capitalism, a charge rejected by the ruling outfit which has sought to portray its rivals as corrupt and practising nepotism. Thackeray maintained the two-day meeting took some important decisions and resolved to set up coordination committees.

Kolkata's AJC Bose college bans 'indecent dresses' like torn jeans, asks students to sign affidavit
Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College (AJC Bose College) have introduced a strict dress code for first-year students, sparking a debate over the definition of «indecent dresses» and «normal civil dresses.» According to the college's directive, first-year students are required to sign an affidavit in which they pledge not to wear torn or artificially torn jeans or any form of indecent attire on college premises, a TOI report stated. The affidavit, a copy of which is now mandatory for admission, reads, «Having been admitted to Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College, I will never enter inside college premises wearing torn/artificially torn jeans or any kind of indecent dresses. I do hereby affirm that I shall wear normal civil dresses during my study period inside the entire college premises.» This decision comes in the wake of a similar notice issued by the college last year, which cautioned both students and staff against wearing «torn or artificially torn jeans». Principal of AJC Bose College, Purna Chandra Maity, defended the move, stating that it was aimed at instilling strict discipline within the educational institution.
