Centre will use the excuse of Arvind Kejriwal's arrest to impose President's rule in Delhi: Omar Abdullah
Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti termed the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal as authoritarianism and feared that BJP government might use it to impose President’s rule in Delhi. “An important person in the opposition alliance has been arrested. Clearly this is linked to the elections…Some weeks ago Jharkhand CM was in a similar position,” Abdullah told reporters here. He further said that there is no party in the country which opposes BJP and hasn’t faced similar attacks. “This is unfortunately part of a process whereby democratic institutions in this country have gradually been eroded to the point where they almost now cease to exist,” he said. “During the emergency years of the 1970's people still had hope in the courts, but that hope seems to be non-existent now,” he said.

4.2 million car sales may blast their way to record
India's car industry is on track for a record-breaking year, with sales expected to touch about 4.23 million vehicles, buoyed by a double-digit sales surge this month. The robust performance would cement India's position as the world's third-largest passenger vehicle market, staying ahead of Japan for the second year in a row. As many as 3.99 million passenger vehicles were registered in Japan in 2023, which reports data on a calendar year basis. China is the largest car market, followed by the US. Around 375,000-380,000 cars, sedans and utility vehicles are expected to be sold in India in March, up from 336,000 units a year earlier, making it the 15th consecutive month that PV sales have breached previous monthly records. For the first time, sport-utility vehicles are set to capture more than half of the passenger vehicle market in a year underscoring their growing popularity.

Russian and Belarusian Athletes Vetting Process at Paris 2024 Olympic Games: Here’s all you may want to know
International Olympic Committee (IOC) has mandated a vetting process for Russian and Belarusian athletes who have qualified successfully for the Paris 2024 Olympics. This decision comes following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 after which the IOC worked on issuing a ban from participating in IOC-affiliated competitions including the upcoming Paris Olympics. However, the IOC later allowed them for qualifying at the Paris Olympics but they will be allowed to participate after following a vetting process. They will also be called for participation on the basis of individual neutral athletes which will see them participating in the Olympics without their country's flag, emblem or anthems.

HDFC bank raises $1 billion in 3-yr syndicated loan
HDFC Bank, the country's largest lender by market value and the biggest Nifty constituent by weight, has doubled its overseas borrowing through a term loan syndication from a clutch of 23 global banks in a greenshoe option to the primary facility, having initially borrowed $500 million from Japan's largest lender MUFG in December. HDFC Bank, which merged its mortgage lending parent into itself last year, chose to exercise the green shoe option to raise another $500 million, taking the total proceeds to $1 billion in what is the largest three-year overseas loan organised by an Indian bank. «The syndication was completed on Thursday and the full green shoe option was exercised by HDFC Bank due to the strong demand from foreign banks,» said a person aware of the deal. «Banks from Asia, the Middle East and Europe participated in this syndication, which is the largest three-year syndication by an Indian bank for general corporate purposes.»

When Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called for new elections aimed at ending the current government in Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took umbrage. On CNN last Sunday, Netanyahu called Schumer’s comments about elections “totally inappropriate," adding, “That’s something the Israeli public does on its own. We are not a banana republic." Netanyahu found a receptive ear among Senate Republicans, whom he addressed in a virtual closed-door speech on Wednesday.

Why are women both sadder and happier than men?
I have a good job, a loving husband, healthy kids and a comfortable home. I came late to it all and I sometimes can’t believe my luck: that the sleep-warm little bodies I help dress in the morning are my own children, that the man in my bed at night helped me make them. But the clichés about motherhood and aging and that ever-elusive work-life balance did not quite prepare me for the clichés of my life.
