Charting the global economy: Panama Canal is being squeezed shut by drought
Federal Reserve will cut interest rates early next year. The acceleration in payrolls is at odds with recent reports that have depicted a softer hiring pace, an outcome favoured by the Fed as it will help rein in demand and tame price pressures. Officials are still expected to leave rates unchanged when they meet next week. Elsewhere, Japan’s economy contracted in the third quarter by more than initially reported, while Brazil’s barely expanded in the period.

Reform push laid ground for India's robust growth: PM Modi
Narendra Modi asserted on Saturday that the priority given to policy, good governance and citizens' welfare in the past decade has resulted in India becoming a robust economy with a GDP growing 7.7% in the last six months. Thanks to his regime's transformative reforms, the world is looking at India with hope and as a strong contender to lead the Global South. In a virtual address to the second edition of the Infinity Forum, a global thought leadership platform on fintech, the Prime Minister said India is a symbol of resilience and progress at a juncture when the world is facing geopolitical tensions, high inflation and growing debt levels. «India's growth story has shown to the world that when policy is accorded top priority, when all strength is put behind good governance and when welfare of the country and its people is the sole basis of economic policies, then what will be the outcome can be seen from the 7.7% growth in the first six months of this fiscal year,» Modi said. He recalled the IMF statement in September that global growth in 2023 will be due in some measure to India. In July, the World Bank had said that India gave hope amid global challenges.

Canada's surging cost of living fuels reverse immigration
Canada is turning into a battle for survival for many immigrants due to the high cost of living and rental shortages, as rising emigration numbers hint at newcomers being forced to turn their back on a country that they chose to make their adopted home. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made immigration his main weapon to blunt Canada's big challenge of an aging and slowing population, and it has also helped fuel economic growth. That drove Canada's population up at its fastest clip in more than six decades this year, Statistics Canada said. Want to know if you qualify for immigration? SUV launches jam sales highway as sedans and hatchbacks take a backseat
Indian carmakers have rolled out more sports utility vehicles than all other types of passenger vehicles combined in the last two years and the trend is likely to continue with many new SUVs proving instant hits. The number of SUV launches hit a new high this calendar year at 108, reaching the three-figure mark for the first time. In the overall passenger vehicle segment, though, there have been fewer launches in 2023 than in the pre-pandemic 2019 with hatchbacks and sedans taking a hit, data collated by automotive market research firm Jato Dynamics shows. Only 47 new sedan models hit the road this year (till October end) against 62 in 2019 while the number of hatchback launches more than halved to 21 from 48. The increased focus on SUVs reflects a major shift in the Indian passenger car market in the last few years.

Tour companies request PMO to campaign for Brand India
The domestic travel and tourism industry is now urging the Prime Minister's Office to prioritise initiatives that attract foreign tourists and boost overseas marketing and promotional campaigns. The Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) said on Friday it has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention for the revival of the inbound tourism industry. «The letter has drawn the attention of the prime minister to the recently made statement in Parliament by Union tourism minister G Kishan Reddy that only 85.9 lakh foreign tourist visitors visited the country in 2022 as compared to 3.14 crore in 2019,» said IATO president Rajiv Mehra. «It mentions multiple reasons for the decline in numbers such as withdrawal of incentives to the inbound tour operators on their foreign exchange earnings which were being used for overseas marketing and promotions; lack of trained tourism manpower in Indian embassies who are not able to do regular follow-ups with the foreign tour operators,» said Mehra. «Advance planning of at least one year is required and dedicated budgetary funds should be provided to the ministry of tourism for aggressive overseas promotions.
