Irish author Paul Lynch takes home Booker Prize for dystopian novel 'Prophet Song'
Booker Prize for fiction on Sunday with what judges called a «soul-shattering» novel about a woman's struggle to protect her family as Ireland collapses into totalitarianism and war. 'Prophet Song,' set in a dystopian fictional version of Dublin, was awarded the 50,000-pound ($63,000) literary prize at a ceremony in London. Canadian writer Esi Edugyan, who chaired the judging panel, said the book is «a triumph of emotional storytelling, bracing and brave» in which Lynch «pulls off feats of language that are stunning to witness.» Lynch, 46, had been the bookies' favourite to win the prestigious prize, which usually brings a big boost in sales.

Invesco under Sebi lens for alleged violation of rules
Sebi) has issued a show-cause notice to the local unit of Invesco, a US-based asset manager, for possible violations of mutual fund rules that potentially risked investor money, people familiar with the development told ET. Invesco is reportedly found to have shuffled securities between schemes in alleged violation of rules. However, the company is said to have defended its actions before the capital-markets regulator, arguing that investors did not lose money because of its actions as it shifted loss-making bonds of an eventually defaulting non-bank lender onto its own balance sheet to prevent erosion in investor wealth. Sebi's notice reportedly served a couple of months ago, alleges a lack of segregation between the mutual fund and portfolio management service activities, questionable inter-scheme transfer of securities compromising investor interests, and the transfer of certain securities to offshore funds ahead of potential downgrades, two sources aware of the development said. Invesco responded to the regulator's notice last month, one of the persons cited above said. Emails sent to Invesco Asset Management India and Sebi remained unanswered until the publication of this report.

Australia's competition watchdog said on Monday new competition laws are required in response to the rapid expansion of digital platforms such as Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta and Microsoft in the country. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) in its latest report for the Digital Platform Services Inquiry raised concerns that expansion of these platforms has increased the risk of them engaging in harmful behaviour, such as invasive data collection and practices that lock in customers and limit their choices.

Much still remains to be done at that level. However, the next phase of reforms will have to be directed at reforms in the states.

Nurture all universities for Indian higher education to get globally competitive
The landscape of Indian higher education institutions (HEIs) is experiencing rapid evolution, propelled by factors such as changing student expectations, a renewed emphasis on research quality and innovation, burgeoning global collaborations, a fervent desire for international recognition and intense competition in the academic sector among both public and private players. This transformation is also fuelled by accrediting bodies and ranking entities like NAAC, NBA, NIRF, UGC and AICTE, which wield substantial influence, shaping the academic landscape in terms of peer standing, access to grants and funding, student preferences, branding, faculty recruitment and development, and the introduction of new courses.
