High speed driving not always rash or negligent: Delhi HC acquits man in accident case that led death of two
Delhi high court has ruled that driving a vehicle at high speed does not necessarily amount to rash and negligent driving. The judgment came while acquitting a man convicted in a 2012 accident case that resulted in the death of two pedestrians, a TOI report stated. The petitioner, a car cleaner, was sentenced to 18 months in jail in 2022 after he lost control of a vehicle he had taken out for a drive. He claimed a sudden tyre burst caused the accident. Hearing his appeal, Justice Saurabh Banerjee stated that merely driving at a «high speed» does not prove the driver was «rash and negligent.»

South Korea court upholds President Yoon's impeachment, strips him of office
President Yoon Suk Yeol, upholding parliament's impeachment motion over his short-lived imposition of martial law last year that sparked the country's worst political crisis in decades. With Yoon's ouster, a presidential election is required to take place within 60 days, according to the country's constitution. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will continue to serve as acting president until the new president is inaugurated. The ruling caps months of political turmoil that have overshadowed efforts to deal with the new administration of U.S. President Donald Trump at a time of slowing growth. Separately, 64-year-old Yoon faces a criminal trial on insurrection charges. The embattled leader became the first sitting South Korean president to be arrested on January 15 but was released in March after a court cancelled his arrest warrant.

SC raps WB school service commission, says intentionally covered up lapses
West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) saying it «intentionally» covered up the lapses and illegalities in the appointment of 25,753 teachers and staffers in state-run and state-aided schools. The scathing remarks came from a bench of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar in its judgement by which it annulled the appointment of 25,753 teachers and staffers. Authoring the judgement, the CJI said despite the factual background and the credible evidence indicating irregularities the «WBSSC initially did try and cover up the lapses and illegalities». The CJI went on, «The cover up itself has made the verification and ascertainment more difficult or rather impossible given the scale of camouflage and dressing up done at each stage. We are convinced that the entire selection process was intentionally compromised due to the illegalities involved.» The top court upheld the Calcutta High Court's findings on illegalities in the selection process on 17 counts. The high court said OMR sheets were destroyed without the scanned mirror images being preserved on the commission's server.

Is Elon Musk planning something huge for midterm elections after losing the Wisconsin battle?
The CEO of Tesla and close counselor to President Donald Trump had strongly supported right-wing candidate Brad Schimel, cautioning that the contest held great importance for «Western Civilization.» Schimel's possible loss by a double-digit margin has sparked scrutiny of Musk's clout within Republican ranks as he looks toward upcoming elections, including the near-term midterms. Musk, who has had an active role in developing Republican tactics, dismissed the loss in Wisconsin as the inevitable result, as mentioned in a report by Forbes. In a post on social media after the vote, he explained that he had expected the defeat, indicating that his long-term effort to shape elections is not interrupted.

New India Bank fraud: Ex-chairman Hiren Bhanu, his wife declared as proclaimed offenders
New India Cooperative Bank's former chairman Hiren Bhanu and his wife Gauri Bhanu as proclaimed offenders in connection with the Rs 122 crore embezzlement case, a police official said on Thursday. The Bhanu couple fled the country separately days before the embezzlement case came to light in February. The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the city police, which is probing the case, has so far arrested eight persons, including the bank's former General Manager Hitesh Mehta and former CEO Abhimanyu Bhoan. «The EOW had moved an application before the court seeking that Bhanu and his wife be declared as proclaimed offenders. The court has accepted the plea,» an official told PTI. The court had earlier issued a non-bailable warrant against the duo, he said. While Hiren Bhanu fled the country on January 26, his wife and the bank's former vice-chairperson Gauri Bhanu left on February 10, just a few days before the scam came to light. «As both of them are out of the country, and finding their location was necessary for the probe, a Blue Corner Notice was issued against them earlier,» the official said.

Defamation case against Rahul Gandhi: UP court defers hearing to April 15
Rahul Gandhi due to the complainant's failure to present a witness. Advocate Kashi Prasad Shukla, representing the Rae Bareli MP, confirmed that the hearing could not take place due to absence of witness. The hearing was supposed to take place on Thursday, but since the complainant failed to present any witness, no proceedings could be conducted, Shukla said. The court has now scheduled the next hearing for April 15, he added. The defamation case dates back to 2018, when local BJP leader Vijay Mishra filed a defamation suit against Gandhi over his alleged derogatory remarks against BJP leader Amit Shah made during the Karnataka assembly elections. During the five years between 2018 and 2023, the case underwent multiple proceedings, but Gandhi reportedly failed to appear in court. In December 2023, following a warrant, the Congress leader appeared in court. In February 2024, he complied with the summons and the special magistrate granted him bail on two sureties of Rs 25,000 each. The court later instructed him to record his statement, which was finally completed on July 26, 2024, though after multiple postponements.

Democrats are fighting back against President Donald Trump. Are Republicans losing ground?
Donald Trump's agenda of deep cuts and trade protectionism, as per a report. There have been successes to slow the Trump juggernaut in court, but the lack of a coherent plan in Congress has frustrated anti-Trump Americans who have been clamoring for leaders able to show some fight, AFP reported. So there was jubilation Tuesday when a Democratic-backed candidate won the controlling seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, the top judicial body in one of the most closely-fought swing states. Republicans hung on to two House seats in Florida on the same night, but with leads greatly reduced from Trump's 2024 victory margins — worrying lawmakers in much more vulnerable seats ahead of next year's midterms. «Last night's results were the shot in the arm Democrats needed,» said political analyst Andrew Koneschusky, a former senior Democratic staffer in the US Senate.

Elon Musk’s costly gamble on Wisconsin’s Supreme Court backfires as voters hand him an embarrassing political defeat
Elon Musk, who spent millions opposing her. The most expensive race of its kind drew national attention, owing to Elon Musk's significant investment in Brad Schimel's campaign, which ultimately failed to sway voters. The ostensibly nonpartisan race turned into the costliest state Supreme Court race in American history, serving as the first significant battleground state election of President Donald Trump's second term. Following Crawford's win in the first battleground state election of Donald Trump's second term, liberals will continue to hold a slim majority on the court. According to NBC News, Democratic-backed Dane County circuit judge Susan Crawford defeated former Republican attorney general Brad Schimel, a Waukesha County circuit judge, to win a 10-year term on the court. Donald Trump and Elon Musk, his multibillionaire advisor, suffer as a result.
