Trump reverses Biden's Student Loan Forgiveness plan: Here's how it will affect millions borrowers
Department of Education has taken down applications for all income-driven repayment (IDR) plans, which are designed to keep monthly payments manageable and provide a pathway to eventual loan forgiveness. The move affects four popular IDR programs: Income-Based Repayment (IBR), Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR), Pay As You Earn (PAYE), and the new SAVE (Saving on a Valuable Education) plan introduced by the Biden administration in 2023. These plans base payments on a borrower’s income and family size, with remaining balances forgiven after 20 or 25 years. The department did not make a formal announcement about the removal of IDR applications, instead posting a brief notice on its website. The lack of communication has led to widespread confusion, with borrowers and advocates scrambling for clarity.

ED probing foreign link to ₹3,558-crore 'cloud storage' scam
Enforcement Directorate (ED) is investigating if there's a foreign link to a multi-thousand crore fraud allegedly committed by an IT company headquartered in Noida. The agency has thus far identified proceeds of crime to be ₹3,558 crore, generated by Vuenow Marketing Services Ltd (VMSL) and its entities. In a breakthrough, the federal agency Saturday arrested Sukhvinder Singh Kharour, CEO of the company, and his wife Dimple Kharour. The agency said that the duo was trying to fly out of India, however an active look out circular (opened against them at the behest of the agency) helped detain the duo at the Indira Gandhi International Airport after the Bureau of Immigration tipped off the federal agency sleuths. Interestingly, Sukhvinder claimed before the court that he and his wife were arrested from Nepal at 8 am on February 28. The court found Sukhvinder's claim «devoid of any merit» and granted ED ten days of custodial interrogation.

Judge rules head of watchdog agency must keep his job, says Donald Trump's bid to oust him was unlawful
federal watchdog agency must remain in his job, a judge in Washington ruled on Saturday, saying President Donald Trump's bid to remove the special counsel was unlawful. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson sided with Hampton Dellinger, who leads the Office of Special Counsel, in a legal battle over the president's authority to oust the head of the independent agency that's likely headed back to the U.S. Supreme Court. Dellinger sued Trump last month after he was fired even though the law says special counsels can be removed by the president «only for inefficiency, neglect of duty, or malfeasance in office.» Jackson, who was nominated to the bench by Democratic president Barack Obama, quickly reinstated Dellinger in the job while he pursued his case.

Won't spare those who damaged public property post-Pune bus rape incident, says Ajit Pawar
Ajit Pawar on Saturday warned of a stern action against those who vandalised public property following the alleged rape of a woman inside a state transport bus in Pune. The 26-year-old victim was raped inside a parked bus of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) at the Swargate bus stand located in the heart of the city in the early hours of Tuesday. The next day, local Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Vasant More and his party workers vandalised the security cabin at the Swargate bus depot to protest against the incident. Speaking to reporters here, Pawar said action will be taken against those who damaged public property. «Let the probe get over and let the facts come to the fore. After that, action will be taken against those who vandalised public property. They will not be spared. Does anyone damage his own house's window panes if an accused is not arrested?» he asked. «Even the court had made it clear in the past that if anyone resorts to vandalism of public property, then damages should be recovered from these party workers or the party,» he said.

Discussion of women's progress superficial without safe public spaces: Delhi HC
Delhi High Court has said unless an environment free from harassment and fear was created, all discussions on women's progress were superficial. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma said real empowerment began with women's right to live and move freely without fear. The court made the observations in a judgement passed on February 28 while refusing to interfere with the conviction of a man for sexually harassing his female co-passenger on a public bus in 2015. In 2019, the trial court convicted the accused and sentenced him to undergo simple imprisonment for one year for offence punishable under Section 354 (Assault of criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code and six months under Section 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of the woman) IPC. The decision was also upheld by the sessions court in appeal.

Powers of Trump and Congress collide in government shutdown fight

WASHINGTON : President Trump has spent his first weeks back in office undoing much of the handiwork of Congress—freezing spending that lawmakers authorized, idling agencies that were already funded and bypassing laws regarding immigration and independent agencies. A budget fight now brewing in Congress is becoming the first test of whether lawmakers will try to claw back any of their powers—or whether they accede to a new power alignment in Washington that centralizes far more authority in the White House.

CRA wins case against remote worker who claimed $67,000 in moving expenses
Tax season is now underway, and if you moved in 2024, you may be entitled to write off your moving expenses, assuming you qualify. Not all moves, however, qualify as an “eligible relocation,” and the ability to deduct moving expenses can be challenged by the taxman, which is what happened in a recent case decided earlier this month. But before delving into the details of this latest case, let’s briefly review the rules for deducting moving expenses.

Bengaluru court takes fresh cognisance of chargesheet against B S Yediyurappa, issues summons
BJP leader BS Yediyurappa and three other accused in connection with a POCSO Act case to appear before it on March 15. The court which handles cases booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act took fresh cognisance of a charge sheet filed by the Karnataka Criminal Investigation Department (CID) against 82-year-old Yediyurappa, a former chief minister. The Karnataka High Court on February 7 had directed the special court to consider afresh and pass appropriate orders on the CID's final report in the case. The High Court had issued this order while partly allowing the petition filed by Yediyurappa challenging proceedings against him under the POCSO Act, and remitting back to the trial court the criminal case registered against him. It had also granted anticipatory bail to him.
