Bitcoin (BTC), the world’s largest cryptocurrency, and other major crypto tokens declined on Thursday, January 23, amid profit booking at higher levels and the absence of any Bitcoin-related statements from former US President Donald Trump. As of 10:18 am IST, Bitcoin was trading at $101,938, down 3.4%, after hitting an intraday low of $101,604. Ethereum declined 3.8% to $3,194. The global crypto market cap saw a decline of 3.4%, falling to $3.52 trillion.

Bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency by market value, surged above the $107,000 mark in early trading on Wednesday, following news of the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) plan to overhaul crypto regulations. The SEC’s new leadership revealed on Tuesday that it had formed a task force to develop a regulatory framework for digital assets, marking the first major initiative from the Trump administration to address crypto policy.

As of 11:42 am IST, Bitcoin was trading at $101,739, down 0.8%, after hitting an intraday low of $100,103. Ethereum declined 0.7% to $3,248. The global crypto market cap saw a slight decline of 0.12%, falling to $3.51 trillion.

Bitcoin (BTC), the world’s largest cryptocurrency, fell below the $94,000 mark in early Friday trading, weighed down by rising bond yields and expectations for a strong US jobs report. During Asian trading hours, the dollar gained 0.5% against the yen, reaching 158.03 yen, and strengthened by over 1% against the British pound, which sank to a 14-month low amid a sell-off in gilts and concerns about the UK’s financial stability.

At 2:07 pm IST, Bitcoin (BTC) was trading 0.86% higher at $67,869, while Ethereum rose by 0.7% to $2,637. Earlier in the day, Bitcoin briefly touched the $68,300 mark.

In a week marked by a notable 7% gain in the overall crypto market cap, meme coins such as Dogwifhat, Pepe, and Dogecoin have experienced significant spikes.

Bitcoin’s (BTC) recent price trajectory has fueled speculation and uncertainty, particularly as the cryptocurrency struggles amidst a three-day losing streak. Currently hovering around $57,280, with an intraday low of $56,750, Bitcoin’s performance in the market remains lackluster .

The Federal Reserve held interest rates steady on Wednesday as policymakers struggled to determine whether financial conditions may be tight enough already to control inflation, or whether an economy that continues to outperform expectations may need still more restraint. After the end of a two-day policy meeting, Powell said the better course of action for now, given the uncertainties, was to maintain the Fed's benchmark overnight interest rate in the current 5.25%-5.50% range, and see how job and price data evolve between now and the next policy meeting in December. Meanwhile, after the Fed's decision, the global cryptocurrency market cap surged by 2.45% to over $1.3 trillion in the last 24 hours.

South Korea's virtual asset market has experienced a significant surge during the first half of 2023, reaching a total market cap of $21.1 billion.

BTC volume stood at approximately $35.99 billion, rising 65.73% in the last 24 hours. «The crypto market is feeling the heat from the collapse of pro-crypto Silvergate bank coupled with the hawkish stance taken by the US central bank. The contagion fears from the Silvergate fiasco are keeping the investors on their toes and the crypto community will closely watch the regulatory recourse around the same,» Shivam Thakral, CEO of BuyUcoin, said. Other top crypto tokens were also trading lower. Tron declined by over 12%. Litecoin, Shiba Inu, Solana and Dogecoin were also trading with losses. The global cryptocurrency market cap was trading lower around $934.23 billion, falling 6.29% in the last 24 hours. The total volume in DeFi is currently 5.03 billion, 7.6% of the total crypto market 24-hour volume. The volume of all stablecoins is now $60.73 billion, which is 91.83% of the total crypto market 24-hour volume.

Cryptocurrency markets experienced a relatively calm month in February as the total market capitalization gained 4% in the period. However, the fear of regulatory pressure appears to be having an impact on volatility in March.

The total crypto market capitalization rejected at $1.13 trillion on Feb. 16, but there was no change in the month-long ascending channel structure. More importantly, this level represents a 43% gain in 2023, which is far from the $3 trillion level achieved in November 2021. Still, the current recovery is notable. 

The total crypto market cap jumped nearly 4% following a speech from United States Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell in which he suggested the economy’s disinflationary process has started.

Despite the recent negative crypto and macroeconomic newsflow, the total cryptocurrency market capitalization broke above $1 trillion on Jan. 21. An encouraging sign is that derivatives metrics are not showing increased demand from bearish traders at the moment.
