Death penalty in US: Alabama Governor announces America's first nitrogen hypoxia execution. Details of method here
death penalty as Alabama will go ahead with the much talked about execution using nitrogen hypoxia, an alternative method to lethal injection, as confirmed by the state's Republican governor. The method of execution known as nitrogen hypoxia entails the deprivation of oxygen to both the brain and the body, resulting in the demise of the inmate through suffocation. The execution of Kenneth Eugene Smith, initially planned via lethal injection, encountered an unexpected cancellation in November. The state faced challenges in properly establishing the IV line before the execution warrant expired.

The Sleep Habit That’s More Important Than Getting 8 Hours
There is hope for those of us who live (and sleep) in the real world: Getting less than 8 hours of shut-eye a night doesn’t mean you’re doomed to an early grave. A recent study looking at sleep and longevity found that sleep “regularity"—going to bed and waking up at consistent times with few mid-slumber interruptions—matters more than how long you sleep. Sleeping six hours every night on a consistent schedule was associated with a lower risk of early death than sleeping eight hours with very irregular habits.

The most loyal dog in the world turns 100
statue of a dog whose true story of loyalty has made him a beloved mascot for generations. Hachiko, whose birth centenary is this week, belonged to university professor Hidesaburo Ueno. The faithful hound would wait at Shibuya station for his master to come home every day. Ueno died unexpectedly in 1925, but Hachiko continued to come to the train station to wait forlornly for Ueno for nearly 10 years until passing away in March 1935. The story, similar to that of 'Greyfriars Bobby' in 19th-century Scotland, touched the hearts of many locals, who pitched in money to build its statue in 1934, shortly before the dog's death. In World War II, the statue was melted down for the metal, but a new one was installed in 1948 and became a popular meeting spot. Today, locals and foreigners alike queue up to snap photos with the statue of the Japanese Akita dog, a popular breed with its own museum in Hachiko's birthplace of Odate. «I would like my dog to be waiting for me as long a time as he did,» Spanish honeymooner Omar Sanchez, 33, said as he snapped selfies with his wife and the statue. «The story is sweet.

Lung cancer rates are dropping faster than any other type in Canada. Here’s why
Lung cancer death rates in Canada are declining faster than any other type of cancer, which can be attributed to the significant impact of tobacco control and early detection efforts, according to a new report. The report, Canadian Cancer Statistics 2023, was released Wednesday by the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) in collaboration with Statistics Canada and found the biggest reason behind the fall in lung cancer deaths is due to a reduction of tobacco use, which is the leading risk factor for the disease.Research advancements have also played a crucial role in improving lung cancer survival through early detection and more precise and effective treatments with fewer harmful side effects, the report found.“This finding really highlights the progress that has been made in reducing lung cancer incidence through commercial tobacco control and prevention efforts,” Jennifer Gillis, senior manager of surveillance for the CCS, told Global News.“It really highlights the progress that has been made to advance early detection and treatments, to improve outcomes and quality of life for people affected by lung cancer.”In 2023, it is estimated that 239,100 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer and 86,700 will die from the disease, according to CCS. Lung, breast, prostate and colorectal cancer make up for almost half of all new cancer diagnoses.Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, responsible for about one in four cancer fatalities among Canadians.
