According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, at around 1:46 a.m., it received a report of a massive fire incident at a large storage yard near 14th and Alameda streets. It said that more than 150 firefighters were engaged to douse the raging fire which was spreading to nearby areas. The Fire Department said that taking into consideration the severity of the incident, the closure may last at least 24 hours. According to David Ortiz, LAFD Public Information Officer the fire had engulfed both the sides of 14th Street underneath the 10 freeway. The heat was so intense that it melted some of the roadway’s steel guardrails. According to the Fire Department, after the fire incident, the blaze from the first one spread to the nearby warehouse yard between Lawrence and Elwood streets. The massive fire also damaged several cars and a fire engine. But before it could spread, the firefighters were able to control the fire from spreading to three commercial buildings. Officials said that some homeless people who were residing underneath the overpass had a miraculous escape with no injuries. The fire Department said that the crews were assessing the damage and inspecting the structural safety of the freeway. According to LADF, the Freeway will remain closed for traffic until Caltrans gives a green signal that the highway is safe. The Los Angeles Fire Department has issued an advisory for drivers taking the route. The advisory reads: «Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes and follow CHP». There was a mile-long backlog of traffic on both the directions. Eastbound traffic at Alameda Street and westbound traffic at Santa Fe Avenue were being rerouted by the CHP.
