While Non-Resident Indians NRIs are not required to obtain an Aadhaar number, the recent conclusion of the deadline for linking PAN and Aadhaar numbers caused distress for many NRIs, as their PAN cards have become 'inoperative.' To allay these fears, the Income Tax Department issued three clarifications. Firstly, ITD has mapped the residential status of NRIs in case they have filed the ITR in any of the last 3 AYs or they have intimated their residential status to the Jurisdictional Assessing Officer (JAO). The PANs have been rendered inoperative, in case any one of the above-mentioned criteria is not met. NRIs whose PANs are inoperative have been asked to intimate their residential status to their respective JAO along with supporting documents with a request to update their residential status in the PAN database. ₹24 lakh cash was found from his residence in Bareilly. Himachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri on Monday said the Jal Shakti Department has suffered losses to the tune of Rs 1,411 crore due to floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in the hill state. He said 5,203 drinking water schemes, 1,237 irrigation schemes and 55 sewerage schemes were affected while 101 flood control works were damaged. Agnihotri, who holds the portfolio of Jal Shakti Vibhag, said while 4,623 schemes have been restored so far, it will take time to fix all of them. «We have been able to restore them because of the passionate and steely spirits of our employees,» he said. «I appreciate the work being done by the employees and officers of the department for the restoration of drinking water and sewerage schemes in difficult circumstances,» he added. Agnihotri said the government's aim was to provide relief to the affected people at the earliest.

Atul Anand took over as Additional Secretary of Department of Military Affairs on Monday, the Defence Ministry said. The post was previously held by Lt Gen Anil Puri, who retired on February 28 this year, the ministry said in a statement.

The United States Justice Department has unsealed charges against two men it says are responsible for the $400 million hack of former Bitcoin (BTC) exchange Mt. Gox. According to the announcement, 43-year-old Alexey Bilyuchenko and 29 year old Aleksandr Verner allegedly conspired to launder 647,000 BTC they stole from Mt. Gox through a hack of the exchange’s servers.
