ECB’s poised to cut rates again in warm-up act for the US Fed
European Central Bank will probably cut interest rates on Thursday in a prelude to a US move the following week, as the global monetary cycle tilts toward more synchronized easing. Euro-zone officials have signalled that they'll deliver a second reduction in borrowing costs, following up on July's move, which will be scrutinized by investors looking for policymakers' intentions for any further steps later this year. At least one more cut is seen likely in 2024.

Asian stocks drop as jobs data adds to case for Fed cuts: Markets wrap
Asian stocks slipped on Monday after US jobs data added to concerns that the Federal Reserve may have waited too long to cut interest rates. Equities in Australia, Japan and South Korea racked up losses in early trading, while US futures were little changed. The dollar was steady against peers, with traders split on the size of the Fed’s easing next week. Iron ore fell below $90 a ton for the first time since late 2022.

Canada is running out of jobs for newcomers
Canada can’t find work or aren’t looking, as businesses hire at a slower pace while the population continues to balloon. The number of working-age people in the country rose by 96,400 in August, Statistics Canada reported Friday, a result of the country’s rapid population growth, which is among the fastest in the world. Over 82,000 people joined the country’s labor force last month, but net employment rose just 22,100. In the last three months, Canada’s economy has created one new job for every six workers who joined the labor force on net, the lowest rate in over a year. It’s a stark deceleration from the start of the year, when the number of jobs was actually growing faster than the number of available workers.

Pipedream or stroke of luck? Pakistan finds hope at bottom of the sea
Pakistan is teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, it has got new hope. It has reportedly found a substantial deposit of petroleum and natural gas in its territorial waters. It's said to be so large that it can change the country's destiny. DawnNewsTV has reported that a three-year survey was undertaken in collaboration with a friendly country to verify the presence of the oil and gas reserves. Pakistan has been struggling with mounting debt and rising inflation for quite some time and has been depending substantially on foreign aid, which is often elusive. To make matters worse, political instability and rising terrorism in some provinces only add to Pakistan's economic plight. Can the new discovery save Pakistan? The news of the discovery of oil and gas reserves sure offers hope to Pakistan, but that hope lies buried at the bottom of the sea. It can't help Pakistan tide over its economic crisis in the near future.

Powering India's economic ambitions: How logistics holds the key to $5 trillion future
India is projected to become a USD $5 trillion economy by 2047. This growth is expected to be driven by a few major factors, key amongst which is a stronger, more robust, streamlined, organised, and efficient logistics and transport infrastructure. The recently announced Union Budget and the broader Amrit Kaal 2047 vision — the government’s active effort to make India an export-led, aatmanirbhar economy — all seek to lay a strong foundation for an organised logistics sector in India. Why? Because the logistics sector, one way or another, will be a significant economic driver for the country in coming years. Consider this: India’s current contribution to global exports stands below 2%. By undertaking strategic capacity building for the logistics sector, the government can, not just boost the economy in the short and medium terms but also supercharge long-term development and economic activity with a massive headroom for growth. Increasing the country’s participation in international value chains through a more organised logistics sector has, therefore, emerged as a clear policy priority — and key players in the space can contribute significantly to this nation building project.

Wall Street Week Ahead: Economic worries back on Wall Street's radar after jobs data
U.S. economy's health is rippling through markets, adding fuel to an already-volatile period that has investors grappling with a shift in Federal Reserve policy, a tight U.S. election and worries over stretched valuations. U.S. stocks tumbled on Friday after closely watched jobs data showed labor market momentum slowing more than expected, suggesting a narrower path for the U.S. to achieve a soft landing, in which the Fed is able to cool inflation without badly damaging economic growth.

Labour ministry urges states to fast-track integration of data with e-Shram portal
labour ministry on Friday urged states to undertake labour reforms and expedite two-way integration of data for unorganised workers with the e-Shram portal for enabling easier access to central social protection and welfare schemes to them. Chairing the second regional meeting with states in Chandigarh, Shobha Karandlaje, minister of state for labour and employment, highlighted the critical need for labour reforms to make India the world’s largest economy by 2047, the ministry said in a statement issued after the meeting. “Our nation should transcend the colonial legacy in the existing labour laws which have originated in the pre-independence era.
