Mint Quick edit | Should India’s mixed trade bag prompt a rupee rethink?
The first month of 2024-25 has been a mixed bag for India’s trade. Exports edged up 1.1% from a year earlier to nearly $35 billion in April, but imports grew faster at 10.3% to $54.1 billion, widening the trade deficit to a four-month high of $19.1 billion. It’s clearly a relief that exports have held up despite geopolitical tensions and trade disruptions globally.

Centre used capex to build quality infrastructure: FM Nirmala Sitharaman
Nirmala Sitharaman Wednesday said the government significantly increased the outlay for capital expenditure (capex) over the last 10 years to build quality infrastructure in the country, which had a significant multiplier effect on economy and investment, besides improving ease of living. She said the share of capex in overall expenditure went up to over 21% in 2023-24 as against just 12% in 2013-14 during the UPA regime, when infrastructure development remained grossly neglected. «Since 2014, our govt has allocated a total of ₹43.53 lakh crore in Gross Budgetary Support (GBS) capital expenditure, an increase of 3.72 times compared to 2004-14,» she said in a long post on social media platform X.

After heatwave spells, Southwest Monsoon likely to reach Kerala by May 31, predicts IMD
India's monsoon rains, essential for the country's economy, are expected to hit the Kerala coast in the southwest on May 31, IMD said in a statement. «This year, the southwest monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala on May 31 with a model error of ± 4 days,» said the weather agency in a statement. «Advance of the southwest monsoon over Indian main land is marked by monsoon onset over Kerala and is an important indicator characterizing the transition from hot and dry season to a rainy season. As the monsoon progresses northward, relief from scorching summer temperatures is experienced over the areas,» added IMD in the statement.

China to allow visa-free entry for foreign tour groups arriving by cruise ships
China will allow visa-free entry for foreign tour groups that come to the country via cruise ships in a further bid to attract international visitors and boost its sluggish inbound travel market. Overseas tour groups on cruise boats will be able to enter and stay in China without a visa for up to 15 days, according to the National Immigration Administration. The new policy will be effective from May 15. Tour groups can enter China from 13 ports including Shanghai, Qingdao, Dalian and Haikou, Mao Xu, a senior official with the immigration administration, said at a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday. Qualifying tour groups need to be received and handled by domestic travel agencies and will be allowed to travel to coastal provinces as well as the capital, Beijing, while they are in China, Mao said.
