Markets rebound on Shah's 400+ call
Amit Shah sought to dispel recent concerns over BJP's performance in the general elections. While emphasising that the ruling party and its allies will get over 400 seats, he told NDTV the market would «shoot up» after June 4 — the election results day — and suggested buying stocks before that. Benchmark Nifty rose 0.22%, or 48.85 points, to close at 22,104 while the Sensex gained 0.15%, or 111.66 points, to close at 72,776. Both indices had fallen over 1% each earlier in the day but bounced back mid-way through the session following the senior minister's remarks.

CCTVs turned off for 45 mins: Supriya Sule expresses concern over Baramati poll incident
Sharad Pawar faction of the NCP on Monday shot off a complaint to the Election Commission of India raising concerns after the CCTVs monitoring the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) used in the Baramati Lok Sabha polls and kept in a strong room, went off. On Monday, Supriya Sule posted a short video on X which showed CCTV cameras monitoring the strong room where the EVMs were kept, not displaying any images. Sule claimed that «the CCTVs going off for 45 minutes is suspicious; when we contacted the election department officials and the administration, we didn't get a satisfactory reply. There is no technician present, and our party functionary is not allowed to survey the EVMs. This is a very serious issue and the Election Commission should take immediate cognizance and disclose why the CCTVs went off». She also asked the EC to take action against those involved in switching off the CCTVs.

INDIA bloc will get 315 seats, BJP to get 195, says Mamata Banerjee
Trinamool Congress will ensure that the INDIA bloc comes to power, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that «INDIA bloc will win at least 315 seats while the BJP will win a maximum of 195 seats.». «There will be no Modi in Delhi. Didi is with the people here. Didi will ensure that the INDIA bloc comes to power at the Centre. Based on the numbers I received till yesterday, they will get around 190-195 seats. INDIA bloc will get 315 seats,» Banerjee said while speaking at a rally in Bangaon Lok Sabha constituency in North 24 Parganas district. «Modi Is not coming to power this time… The polling so far has been good. That is why the leaders of the ruling party at the Centre are scared. They have realised that Modi will not be back as the Pm. They should not brag about 400 seats anymore,» Banerjee said.

Hannibal Lecter, impeccable anti-hero
Donald Trump, has praised Hannibal Lecter, the fictional character created by Thomas Harris. On paper — and in the films where the inimitable Anthony Hopkins plays the inimitable cannibalistic serial killer with impeccable taste — singing hosannas to a supervillain at an election rally is, at best, confusingly provocative, at worst, confusing. 'Has anyone ever seen 'The Silence of the Lambs'? The late, great Hannibal Lecter.

Your phone bill could rise by up to 25% post election
25% increase in their bills after the general election as telecom companies prepare for the fourth round of tariff hikes in recent years, a move which would give a boost to their average revenue per user (ARPU). «We expect a meaningful hike of around 25% by the operators in the near term on the back of a stable competitive environment, their need to improve profitability following heavy 5G investment, and continued government support,» said a report by brokerage Axis Capital. The report said while the quantum of hike may appear large, it should be manageable for both urban and rural users, especially as data usage is sticky. For urban households, subscribers' spending on telecom would go up to 3.6% of total expenditure from 3.2%, it said, while for rural subscribers spending would increase to 5.9% from 5.2%.

Third Eye: Padding up for Varanasi contest
nomination papers from Varanasi drawing closer, the district collectorate saw a flood of candidates on Monday. More than 100 candidates from different parts of the country landed up in Varanasi just to record their names in history by contesting against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. More than 70 nominations were filed on Monday and some candidates were still waiting in the queue. Tuesday is the last day for filing nomination papers. Still following 2014 schedule Prime Minister Narendra Modi is following almost the same campaign schedule in these Lok Sabha elections that he did a decade ago in 2014, when he addressed four to five rallies everyday. After asomewhat slow start in this round, Modi has picked up pace and is holding three rallies and a roadshow virtually everyday. He took a break on May 9 which came as a surprise to many. Leaders from other parties who are younger in age still have a less hectic schedule.

Potato prices likely to be on hot plate till year-end
potato prices will likely continue to pinch Indian households until the new crop comes to the market in December. Tomato prices have fallen by 40% in the past two days at Delhi's Azadpur Mandi, the largest fruit and vegetable wholesale market in Asia, due to increased arrivals from Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab, traders said. On the contrary, potato traders said prices will firm up further by another 5-10% as untimely rains have affected the tuber crop and because of cold storage owners releasing potatoes in a way so that the stock can meet domestic consumption till the arrival of the new crop. Trade sources from Uttar Pradesh, the largest producer of potatoes, said the government has already launched a drive to see whether the cold storage facilities in Agra, the centre of the state's potato trade, were hoarding the tuber to jack up prices. «Once the election is over, there will be state-wide monitoring of the movement of potatoes,» one of them said.
