Nagaland Cabinet, legislators appeal to ENPO not to abstain from Lok Sabha polls
Nagaland Cabinet and legislators of the eastern region of the state appealed to the ENPO to take part in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. The Eastern Nagaland Peoples' Organisation (ENPO) has stuck to its decision not to participate in the Lok Sabha polls until its demand for a separate state carved out of Nagaland is fulfilled by the Centre. The ENPO, the apex body of seven Naga tribes of the region, has been demanding a separate state since 2010, claiming that six districts in the eastern part of Nagaland have been neglected for years. The appeal comes after a meeting of the council of ministers and the Eastern Nagaland Legislators' Union (ENLU) held in Kohima on Saturday.

Governor post 'serious', must act under Constitution: Justice B V Nagarathna
Supreme Court Judge BV Nagarathna has cautioned against instances of governors sitting indefinitely on bills passed by elected legislatures, referring to the case involving the Punjab Governor. In her keynote address at the inaugural session of the fifth edition of Courts and the Constitution Conference, held at the NALSAR University of Law here on Saturday, Justice Nagarathna spoke about the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly case as another instance of gubernatorial overreach, where the governor lacked sufficient material to declare the floor test. «This is not a healthy trend under the Constitution to bring the actions or omissions of the Governor of a state for consideration before constitutional courts,» she said. «I think I must appeal that the office of a governor, though it is called a gubernatorial post, the governor's post is a serious constitutional post, the governors must discharge their duties under the constitution in accordance with the Constitution so that this kind of litigation before the law courts is reduced,» Justice Nagarathna added.

Schooling financial agents on 'saving money' takes poll position
Despite identity proofs and proper documents, like a letter from a bank or micro-lending firm, to back the legitimacy of their cargo, the cash could be confiscated. The money, once proved genuine, would be released only later, at the intervention of the court or a senior government official. No one wants to deal with such harassment — neither the financial institutions nor their field agents and ‘business correspondents’ (BC) who collect cash from villagers paying loan EMIs. Sometimes, though, the arrangement may not be all that kosher if dodgy agents choose to carry unaccounted cash or act as couriers of political parties while on official duty.

Lok Sabha 2024: Caste issues dominate election narratives in Gujarat
The ruling party in power, BJP, are on the defensive with the Kshatriya Community against Union Minister Parshottam Rupala for comments against kings at an event organised by the Valmiki community on March 22. The minister remarked that the kings had bowed before the foriegn tormentors and retained relationships with them, unlike the lower castes. Despite Rupala apologising on many occasions, the controversy has erupting further in the state. To control the agrevating situation, Gujarat BJP President CR Patil had rushed to Rajkot, while Congress turncoat and former MLA from Gondal Jayrajsinh Jadeja held a conciliatory meeting of the community at his house in Gondal on Friday. Eating a humble pie, Rupala went on to reiterate his apology with “folded hands” and said that while he does not remember withdrawing any of his comment in his entire life, this time his party (BJP) has come under criticism because of him. However, his gesture or the party manoeuvre did precious little to douse the anger of the community. Karni Sena Chief of the state, Raj Shekhawat, on Saturday resigned from BJP’s primary membership calling the meeting at Gondal a BJP sponsored move.

Election Commission acts swiftly on violations ahead of Lok Sabha polls
Election Commission directed the central and state governments to remove unauthorised political advertisements from public spaces. On March 20, the Commission, following reports of non-compliance, asked for confirmation of full compliance by 5 pm the next day. This would suggest the narrow window and urgency that election managers had, that other stakeholders may fail to appreciate. Fast Action On March 18, the EC transferred the home secretaries of Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh and the Director General of Police in West Bengal. Several DMs and SPs belonging to four states were transferred on March 21. One witnessed a spate of such transfers during the recent series of five assembly elections.

Congress questions CBI clearance for Praful Patel in 'Rs 30,000 crore Air India scam'
Congress has questioned the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) closing a case against Praful Patel in the BJP-alleged irregularities in leasing aircraft for Air India, alleging that the former civil aviation minister is being let off for joining the ruling alliance after splitting NCP. The main opposition party has recycled BJP's 2014 election material, alleging a «Rs 30,000-crore Air India scam» and blaming Patel for it, and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to come clean on his past statements against the UPA regime over the alleged «Air India scam» as well as BJP's allegations against Patel over purchasing a Mumbai property allegedly from terror accused Iqbal Mirchi's family. «Months after Praful Patel joined the BJP alliance in Maharashtra by splitting NCP, the CBI filed a closure report in a 2017 case of corruption, alleged by the BJP in its 2014 'Chargesheet',» Congress leader Pawan Khera said at an official briefing here on Saturday.
