Morning Coffee: What if Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan & Morgan Stanley chose CEOs like this? Private equity's pain
When chief executives are selected in investment banks, it tends to be a closed door affair. The outgoing leader chooses the next, and there is often some fallout. David Solomon's ascension at Goldman Sachs resulted in his unsuccessful opponent, Harvey Schwartz, joining Carlyle Group. Jamie Dimon's succession machinations at JPMorgan seem to have been partly responsible for Vis Raghavan's exit to Citigroup. Only Ted Pick at Morgan Stanley was chosen by James Gorman in a peculiarly bloodless baton-handing, although it remains to be seen whetherAndy Saperstein and Dan Simkowitz will stay long as number twos.

Will oppose CAA if it is discriminatory and aims at usurping people's rights: Mamata Banerjee
Mamata Banerjee on Monday said she would fiercely oppose the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) if she found it to be discriminatory against groups of people living in India and if it curtailed their existing citizenship rights in any manner. Speaking at a hurriedly convened press conference from the state secretariat, Nabanna, barely minutes before the CAA rules were officially notified by the Centre, Banerjee said this was her «primary response» based on media reports that the announcement was likely to be made soon. Banerjee stated she would offer her detailed opinion on CAA on Tuesday after thoroughly going through the notification and the finalised rules. She asked, «Why do this only days before the Lok Sabha polls are scheduled to be announced? Why did the Centre have to wait for four years to notify the law after it was passed in Parliament?

Hope and happiness among Pak Hindu refugees in Delhi as CAA rules notified
Pakistani Hindu refugees residing in Delhi expressed hope and happiness on the implementation of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act on Monday, saying they are elated that «we will be called Indian citizens finally». Ahead of the Lok Sabha election, the Centre announced the implementation of the contentious CAA 2019 for granting citizenship to undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who came to India before December 31, 2014. Dharamveer Solanki, who is considered the chief of the Pakistani Hindu refugee community in Delhi, told PTI that around 500 from the community will receive citizenship now. «I and my family have been waiting for this for over a decade now. We are extremely happy that finally we will be called Indian citizens now. I am glad I decided to return to my homeland in 2013,» Solanki said.

'Date chosen before Ramadan, 'designed to polarise': Political parties react to CAA implementation
Supreme Court's severe strictures on the Electoral Bonds Scandal." Jairam Ramesh, in a post of X, said the Modi government has taken over four years to notify the rules, after nine extensions. “It has taken four years and three months for the Modi Government to notify the rules for the Citizenship Amendment Act that was passed by the Parliament in December 2019." Refuting the Prime Minister's claims that his government works in a business-like and time-bound manner, Ramesh said that the time taken to notify the rules for the CAA is yet another demonstration of PM Modi's blatant lies. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the other hand has called it BJP's publicity for elections, while also stating that she will fight against the saffron party if the notification deprives people of their rights.

Congress leader and Home Minister G Parameshwara on Monday said there are discussions in the party that seven to eight Ministers should contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka. He, however, said the party will ultimately decide as to who the candidates should be for the 28 Lok Sabha segments. «There are discussions that seven to eight Ministers should contest, among the Ministers. Whoever agrees in the interest of the party, they will be fielded. There may be some clarity on it after today's meeting (of the screening committee),» Parameshwara told reporters here. Asked about Social Welfare Minister H C Mahadevappa not willing to contest, he said, «He (Mahadevappa) is saying that he doesn't want to contest and the ticket be given to his son. Party will ultimately decide whether it will be Mahadevappa or his son or someone else. He cannot be pressured if he doesn't want to (contest).»

Lok Sabha Polls: TMC's state of affairs reflected in its choice of candidates, says Adhir Chowdhury
Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Monday claimed that the Trinamool Congress was in a sorry state of affairs owing to internal squabbles and that was being reflected in its choice of candidates for the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal. The TMC announced the names of its candidates for all the 42 seats in the state, leaving no constituency for its INDIA bloc alliance partners, at its mega rally in Kolkata on Sunday. «TMC is in a sorry state of affairs owing to internal squabbles,» the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee president told reporters at a press conference here. Claiming that Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee is «directionless», the leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha said the TMC was having to show off its might through a public meeting which seemed to be more like a corporate show than a political event.

IT sector outlook: Worst may not be over; Nirmal Bang sees earnings downside risk for FY25-26
Nirmal Bang Equities sees "further downside risk to earnings for the Indian IT services industry for both FY25 and FY26 as current revenue assumptions seem aggressive in the context of industry commentary, the timing of turnaround in growth, prospects of US interest rate trajectory and uncertainty around US economic policies consequent to the presidential elections." "We expect 4-7 per cent constant currency (CC) revenue growth guidance by both Infosys and HCL Tech. Even this may be at risk if the Fed funds rate is not cut materially or if enterprise customers freeze up due to US election uncertainty.

Modi's campaign on guarantees will not change truth; his 'warranty' over: Congress
Congress on Monday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying his «relentless campaign» on 'Modi ki Guarantee' cannot change the truth that he will say whatever he needs to in order to win an election and his «warranty» is now over. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the prime minister is going around the country proclaiming the virtues of his «guarantees» and since he has already been in power for a decade, one must do a status update of 10 guarantees he has given during his tenure. He said Prime Minister Modi promised to create two crore jobs for India's youth every year but unemployment reached a 45-year peak in India under «anyay-kaal (period of injustice)».

Will try to fix cracks appearing in PAGD: CPM leader M Y Tarigami
CPM leader M Y Tarigami on Monday said he will try to mend the cracks that have emerged among PAGD constituents — the National Conference and the PDP — over seat sharing for the Lok Sabha polls in Kashmir. The PAGD — an amalgam of seven parties, including the NC and the PDP — was formed in the wake of the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution by the Centre in August 2109. «The emergence of PAGD was due to a crisis which still exists. There have been differences between the constituents recently which are out in public. I will still try to mend the gaps that have emerged,» Tarigami, who is the spokesperson of the PAGD, told reporters in Srinagar. The People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) had a seat-sharing arrangement for the District Development Council (DDC) polls held in 2020.

Election Commissioner Arun Goel's sudden resignation has led to a crisis: Karti Chidambaram
Election Commissioner Arun Goel has led to a Constitutional crisis and yet the central government has not given any explanation on the matter, Congress leader Karti Chidambaram said on Monday. Speaking to reporters, Karti pointed that no press conference was held and neither was any reason disclosed about the resignation of a person who held a constitutional post. «In a mature democracy, if a senior constitutional functionary resigns, there will be a press conference or there will be a statement, at the least to disclose the reason behind the resignation. His sudden resignation has led to a constitutional crisis and the government has not given any explanation on it,» he remarked.
