Lok Sabha passes Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023
Lok Sabha on Monday passed the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023 which lays down the obligations of entities handling and processing data as well as the rights of individuals. The bill proposes a maximum penalty of Rs 250 crore and minimum of Rs 50 crore on entities violating the norms. The norms will apply to personal data collected within India from data principals online, and personal data collected offline, but subsequently digitised. It will also apply to such processing outside India if it is for offering goods or services to individuals in India. Union Communications, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had tabled the bill in the lower house on August 3. Opposition had demanded that it should be sent to the standing committee for scrutiny. While moving the bill, Vaishnaw had rejected suggestions that it was a money bill saying it was a «normal bill». The bill provides for the processing of digital personal data in a manner “that recognises both the right of individuals to protect their personal data and the need to process such personal data for lawful purposes”.

Editors Guild for house panel review of Data Bill, tags fears
Editors Guild of India has raised concerns about the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Bill, urging the Lok Sabha speaker to send the draft law to a Parliamentary Standing Committee so that some of the issues potentially having a “chilling effect on journalistic activity in the country” could be discussed. The Information Technology ministry has also been urged to reconsider the bill so that access to a free Press, essential to a vibrant democracy, isn’t curbed.

Yeh dil maange more: Companies now focus on ‘all things premium’
Maruti 800 king of the Indian road, the latest available data show companies are launching a disproportionate number of autos and other products at the higher end, reflective of a K-shaped recovery following the pandemic, said market researchers and senior industry executives. That’s narrowing choices at the lower end, where demand has been languishing in the past few years, they said. The number of car models available in the sub Rs 10 lakh category more than halved to 27 in the June quarter from 57 in FY19, according to data available with manufacturers. Models priced over Rs 10 lakh almost doubled to 50. Of the half a dozen or so passenger vehicles unveiled this fiscal year, only the Maruti Suzuki Fronx and the Hyundai Exter have variants priced below Rs 10 lakh. The Maruti Suzuki Jimny and the new Kia Seltos as well as the forthcoming Citroen C3 Aircross and the Honda Elevate are all tagged upward of Rs 10 lakh. In consumer durables, of the 170 televisions launched in the current calendar year, 100 were in the premium 50-inch-plus display size. According to electronics industry market researcher GfK India, the share of such premium televisions in total sales has grown almost four times since 2019 in the first six months of this year. GfK India data show the number of laptops priced above Rs 50,000 stood at 69% of the total models launched in the January-June period compared with 47% in the same period of 2019.

Govt rules out WTO dispute over IT curbs
New Delhi: The Centre anticipates objections from World Trade Organization (WTO) members over the recently imposed import restriction on IT hardware such as computers and electronic items but believes the move won’t lead to the opening of a formal dispute at the international trade body, a government official said. Trade experts believe India, which imports over $8 billion of the listed products, could be dragged to the WTO for the restriction. Fears of a pushback from countries also come against the backdrop of an ongoing WTO dispute over Indian import duty on information communications technology (ICT) products with half-a-dozen countries.
