North Korea set to end years-long sporting isolation at Asian Games
North Korea has 191 athletes signed up for the Asian Games starting next week, according to organisers, suggesting the country is poised to end its more than three-year isolation from the global sporting arena. North Koreans are listed on the Games' website for accredited media to compete in the Chinese city of Hangzhou in sports including athletics, gymnastics, basketball, football, boxing and weightlifting. North Koreans were similarly down to compete at a weightlifting tournament in Cuba in June, but they failed to show. North Korea closed its already tight borders in early 2020 following the outbreak of the pandemic and skipped the Tokyo Olympics, which were pushed back to 2021 because of Covid. It was then banned by the International Olympic Committee from the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics for failing to take part in Tokyo. There have been recent signs that the border restrictions have been eased slightly, with a taekwondo team allowed to travel to a competition last month in Kazakhstan. Prior to that, North Korea had not sent any of its domestic athletes to overseas competitions since the pandemic. The sporting action at the Games in Hangzhou starts on September 19, four days before the opening ceremony, with North Korea scheduled to face Taiwan in men's football that day. Leader Kim Jong Un is said to be an avid sports fan and Games hosts China are North Korea's longtime ally and main economic benefactor. North Korea has traditionally been especially strong in weightlifting, dominating the event at the Jakarta Asian Games in 2018 with eight golds. Ri Song Gum and Rim Un Sim, who both won gold in the women's weightlifting five years ago, are scheduled to appear in Hangzhou. But North Korea has also been among the

Wipro aims to be among top three companies in lighting industry by FY25-end
Wipro Consumer Care & Lighting is aiming to be among the top three companies in the lighting segment by FY2024-25-end, growing faster than the industry average despite challenges related to inflation and low rural consumer demand, a company official said. The company, part of Wipro Enterprises, entered into the home appliances segment more than a year ago, with the launch of the products into the mid to premium segment. Currently, its appliances are an online exclusive brand, available on e-commerce channels, however, it has plans to go offline also, said Sanjay Gupta, Senior Vice President, Consumer Lighting & Switches at Wipro Consumer Care & Lighting. In FY 2022-23, Wipro's Lighting business achieved a remarkable double-digit growth, crossing Rs 1,000 crore revenue. When asked about the growth, Gupta told PTI: «Moving forward, we are confident in our ability to outpace industry growth rates, despite encountering some demand-side challenges in the B2C Lighting segment.» «To sustain this momentum, we have established ambitious growth targets, aiming to secure a spot among the top three players in the Lighting industry by the close of the fiscal year 2025,» he added. Wipro's lighting business is divided into two segments B2C and B2B — contributing 60 and 40 per cent, respectively — in the top line. According to Gupta, there has been a slowdown in the demand for the last one year in the B2C business because of inflation and other factors. «However B2B business is doing very well because of the new infrastructure projects.

Vladimir Putin to comment on 2024 election bid by end of year
Vladimir Putin said Tuesday he will only comment on whether he will run for re-election in 2024 after the ballot is officially announced later this year. Putin has led Russia since the turn of the century, winning four presidential elections and briefly serving as prime minister in a system where political opposition has become virtually non-existent. «According to the law, parliament must make a decision at the end of the year,» Putin told the audience at the Eastern Economic Forum in the Pacific port of Vladivostok. «When the elections are announced, when the date is set, then we will talk about it,» he added. Presidential elections in Russia are officially set by parliament and held every six years, after the term limit was lengthened from four years previously.

BOJ's hawkish tilt suggests end to super-easy policy approaching
Bank of Japan policymakers are increasingly talking up the need to shift away from the massive monetary stimulus of the past decade, even as growing global risks heighten concerns about a fragile economic recovery. A series of hawkish comments by BOJ speakers in recent weeks suggest the bank is preparing markets for an eventual policy change amid growing price pressures in deflation-prone Japan, analysts say. Even dovish members of the BOJ board have expressed an openness to talk about a long-awaited exit from the extremely accommodative policy of former governor Haruhiko Kuroda, acknowledging changes in conditions may warrant a tweak in monetary settings. Governor Kazuo Ueda told a newspaper interview on Saturday the BOJ could get enough data by year-end to judge whether conditions are in place to raise short-term interest rates. Ueda's remarks, which pushed up the yen and bond yields on Monday, followed those of BOJ board member Naoki Tamura last month that suggested the bank could safely hike short-term rates without hurting the economy. «Even if the BOJ were to end negative rates, it won't be scaling back monetary easing as long as it can keep interest rates low,» said Tamura, a former commercial bank executive. The commentary contrasts in tone to the pro-growth posture adopted under Kuroda, an advocate of aggressive monetary easing to shock Japan out of its deflationary mindset. It also suggests the BOJ under Ueda will be more inclined to prioritise unwinding the Kuroda-era policy framework, which has been blamed for distorting bond markets and crushing bank margin. «The BOJ will proclaim that Japan has achieved 2% inflation and end negative rates in April,» said Mari Iwashita, chief market economist at Daiwa

G20 Leadership Summit: Prime Minister Modi calls for end to global trust deficit
Modi Saturday called upon the world community to end the "global trust deficit", saying it was «the time to walk together» as he sought to cast India's presidency of G20 as a stepping stone to the peaceful emergence of a new world order based on mutual trust and universal brotherhood bereft of East-West or North-South divide. Addressing heads of states in the inaugural session of the two-day G20 Leadership Summit in the national capital, Modi exuded optimism that if nations could beat the pandemic by sticking together, they can very well bridge the surge in trust deficit in the wake of the Ukraine war. The Prime Minister also called on the President of the African Union to take a seat among the G20 leaders after they endorsed India's proposal to include the bloc as a permanent member of the grouping. India's proposal was in sync with the principle of togetherness, Modi added. With a miniature Tricolour on his right and the «Bharat» (instead of India) name plank in front of him, the Prime Minister said in Hindi: «Today, Bharat, as the G20 President, calls on the world to first unitedly convert this global trust deficit into confidence and trust.

Hollywood writers strike: WGA urges studios to ignore 'Broken AMPTP Model’ to end protest; read full statement
Writers Guild of America (WGA) have been on strike in Hollywood since May 2, 2023, 12:01 a.m. PDT. In the four months that have passed, several rounds of the WGA representatives’ talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have failed. Now, the WGA has urged the AMPTP to go soft on its stance, if it wants the strike to end. The WGA urged members on September 8 to “stay strong”, while suggesting that studios that want a “fair deal” with their writers will have to agree to the deal or break away from the “broken AMPTP model”. The WGA revealed that some legacy studio executives are keen to agree with the Guild’s stance on certain issues. However, the AMPTP is a system that “favors inflexibility over compromise,” said the WGA. It told members that the studios “will continue attempting to get writers to settle for less than what we need and deserve, and encourage us to negotiate with ourselves”. “But we are not going to do that,” the WGA asserted. “Instead, the companies inside the AMPTP who want a fair deal with writers must take control of the AMPTP process itself, or decide to make a deal separately. At that point, a resolution to the strike will be in reach,” it added in the statement. The WGA also asked members to be careful of studio executives who may try to create dissent among the union writers. “We understand how painful this time is for everyone,” the WGA said to its members. “We are all tired and hurting and scared. There is nothing wrong with saying so.”
