Japan stocks rally amid weakening yen after coalition drubbing
Shigeru Ishiba's coalition lost its parliamentary majority in a drubbing in Sunday's election, raising uncertainty over the path for policy and the economy. Ishiba's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has ruled Japan for almost all of its post-war history, and junior coalition partner Komeito took 215 seats in the lower house of parliament — well short of the 233 needed for a majority — public broadcaster NHK reported. The LDP previously held 247 seats and Komeito held 32.

GIFT Nifty down 10 points; here's the trading setup for today's session
«We expect the consolidation to continue in the short term; a reversal in trend will depend on a slowdown in FIIs selling intensity and the outcome of the US presidential election. The domestic macros are largely favouring the market with the unveiling of strong PMI data and reiterating economic growth forecast for FY25 by the RBI,» said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services.

RBI's rosy growth forecast baffles economists
Reserve Bank of India’s upbeat growth estimates for the world’s fastest-growing major economy is causing both confusion and concern among economists. The central bank has stuck to its forecast that India’s economy will expand 7.2% in the year ending March 2025 despite recent evidence showing activity is starting to taper off. The RBI’s outlook is far more optimistic than the 6.5%-7% growth projected by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Investment banks like Goldman Sachs Corp. have already downgraded growth projections to as low as 6.5%. The RBI’s bullishness is underpinned by its view that rural spending is improving and private investment is picking up. Economists, though, point to sluggish urban consumption and weakening exports as a worry. If those warning signals aren’t heeded in time, the RBI runs the risk of keeping monetary policy too tight, undermining growth further, they say.

Greenwashing guidelines likely spark class action suits against firms: Experts

A class action is a legal mechanism that allows a group of people with a common grievance to file a single case against a party rather than separate lawsuits.

US election 2024: Donald Trump to be jailed after November 5 polls results?
Trump's four criminal cases are quietly chugging along in court even as his race against Vice President Kamala Harris dominates the news. Important legal battles continue to be fought, and motions to be filed. Even now, Trump's lawyers are preparing for him to be sentenced — possibly to jail time — on his one conviction so far at a hearing in New York City scheduled for three weeks after Election Day, NYT Service reported. Trump has told people close to him that if he wins the election, the legal cases would simply «go away.» On Thursday, he said he would fire Jack Smith, the special counsel who filed two federal cases against him, «within two seconds» if he regains the White House. «I don't think they'll impeach me if I fire Jack Smith,» Trump, who was impeached twice by the House of Representatives, told radio host Hugh Hewitt.

Jharkhand Assembly Elections: How tribals and women will shape the outcome
Haryana, the BJP is leaving no stone unturned to oust the Hemant Soren-led government in the eastern state. Senior BJP leaders are camping in the state, keeping a close watch on the day-to-day campaigns. A BJP victory in Jharkhand will send out a message that the party has regained momentum after the Lok Sabha setback. Meanwhile, Jharkhand CM and JMM leader Soren is trying to achieve what no other party has managed in the state so far — a repeat of the government. Assembly polls will also be a test of Soren’s popularity among the tribal voters, as some senior tribal leaders are leaving the party to join the BJP. For Congress, the election is all about gaining relevance after the Haryana setback and repeating its 2019 performance, when the party won 16 assembly seats. In a bipolar election with both alliances having a consolidated vote bank in their favour, a slight shift towards any alliance can change the game. ET lists some factors at play in the upcoming assembly polls:

How Halloween horrors seeded the great gourd scare of 2020
But using gourds, the wider term for bulbous vine fruits of the Cucurbitaceae family, to symbolise heads has an older history. In India, ash-gourds have been used instead of human sacrifices for centuries. The ones kept outside homes to ward off evil often have crude faces painted on them. Gourds grow in most parts of the world and their often-imposing shapes and blandly adaptable flesh mean that societies have found many uses for them. Gourds are used as masks and covers for more private regions. Dried gourds are used in musical instruments such as sitars and banjos. They are used as receptacles for water and foods, and this, in turn, gives them symbolic value. “The great significance of the gourd to many people is perhaps no better shown than by its prominence in their creation myths,” writes Charles Heiser in The Gourd Book. Many stories have gods or the earliest humans created and sheltered in gourds.

Wild bear dies after eating bomb coated with corn flour in Madhya Pradesh's Balaghat forest
Bijora village, a sloth bear lost its life after ingesting a makeshift bomb disguised with corn flour, allegedly intended to attract and kill wild boars. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. near the Laugur forest range, where a patrol team discovered the bear’s body, severely injured with extensive wounds in its mouth from the explosion. Authorities revealed that local villagers often set such crude bombs near forested areas to control wild boar populations, which they view as crop threats. These traps, commonly placed in fields adjacent to the forest, are lethal, causing severe injuries upon consumption and making animals easy targets for hunters. Forest officials believe the bear, while wandering near Bijora village, accidentally encountered one of these bombs.
