markets Experts RAI show country Schools Core sectors' output shrinks 1.8% in Aug on heavy showers
infrastructure industries shrank 1.8% in August from a year earlier, the first contraction in 42 months, compared with 6.1% expansion in the preceding month, according to the official data released on Monday. Experts blamed heavy seasonal showers in August over large swathes of the country, on top of an unfavourable base effect, for the slump. Given their 40% weight in the index of industrial production (IIP), the poor show by the infrastructure industries could limit the August index of industrial production (IIP) expansion to just 1-1.5%, against 4.8% in July, experts said. IIP data for August will be released on October 12. Apart from steel and fertilisers, six of the eight industries-coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, cement and electricity-remained in the negative zone in August, the latest data showed.

markets Target FIVE Gap Election Experts Schools Fiscal deficit in 5 months hits 27% of FY25 target
fiscal deficit in the first five months of 2024-25 stood at 27% of the annual target — lower than 36% a year ago — despite a spurt in August, showed the official data released on Monday. The lower deficit indicates the government remains on track to meet its renewed target of containing the fiscal deficit at 4.9% of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2024-25. The Centre aims to reduce the gap further to less than 4.5% of GDP in 2025-26. The fiscal deficit between April and August touched Rs 4.35 lakh crore, down from Rs 6.43 lakh crore a year before, thanks to a lower gap earlier in the year when the resource mop-up had remained strong while the government spending was constrained by the general elections.

markets Research Bill Experts information reports Department Laws need to catch up to artificial intelligence's unique risks
OpenAI used a system of nondisclosure agreements to stifle public criticism from outgoing employees. Current and former OpenAI staffers were paranoid about talking to the press. In May, one departing employee refused to sign and went public in The Times. The company apologized and scrapped the agreements. Then the floodgates opened. Exiting employees began criticizing OpenAI's safety practices, and a wave of articles emerged about its broken promises. These stories came from people who were willing to risk their careers to inform the public. How many more are silenced because they're too scared to speak out? Since existing whistle-blower protections typically cover only the reporting of illegal conduct, they are inadequate here. Artificial intelligence can be dangerous without being illegal. A.I. needs stronger protections — like those in place in parts of the public sector, finance and publicly traded companies — that prohibit retaliation and establish anonymous reporting channels. OpenAI has spent the last year mired in scandal. The company's chief executive was briefly fired after the nonprofit board lost trust in him. Whistle-blowers alleged to the Securities and Exchange Commission that OpenAI's nondisclosure agreements were illegal. Safety researchers have left the company in droves. Now the firm is restructuring its core business as a for-profit, seemingly prompting the departure of more key leaders.

markets Provident Extreme Mobile Enterprise Experts Schools IXP companies hiking investments amid data centre boom
Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) and peering networks are set to surge in India amid the data centre boom to support increasing IT workloads and strong data consumption by mobile users. IXPs, typically, are physical locations where different networks connect to exchange internet traffic via common switching infrastructure. They are responsible for interconnecting internet service providers (ISPs), content delivery networks (CDNs) such as Cloudfare, Akamai, over-the-top (OTT) players such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, DNS root servers, national and international telco networks and even social media networks like Instagram. As per the Internet Society, India ranks number 2 in Asia on the IXP count metric. But it lags in penetration terms compared to Finland, Singapore, Australia and the UK. For instance, Finland and Singapore have 12.5 and 22 IXPs per 10 million people, respectively, whereas India has only 0.23 IXPs per 10 million people, according to Extreme Infocom.
