new tax regime which combines lower tax rates with a very limited number of exemptions. As of now, an individual's contribution of up to Rs 50,000 to the National Pension System (NPS) under Section 80CCD (1B) as deduction under the old tax regime but not under the new tax regime. Promotion of retirement saving is also a stated goal of the government because of which the above-mentioned deduction was allowed over and above the tax saving investment limit of Rs 1.5 lakh under Section 80C in the old tax regime.

Tesla shares dropped in trade after the carmaker said its lone European factory will be disrupted by attacks in the Red Sea. It also cut car prices in China. Rupee at a four-month high, outperforms Asian currencies
rupee closed at its strongest level in four months on Friday, kicking off 2024 as an outperformer among Asia-Pacific currencies, as US dollar flows have poured in ahead of India's inclusion in global bond indices, while an optimistic view on GDP growth burnishes the country's appeal. So far in January, the rupee has gained 0.4%, with the currency closing at 82.92/$1 on Friday, its strongest closing level since September 12, 2023, Bloomberg data showed. The rupee, which closed at 83.03/$1 on Thursday, weakened 0.6% in 2023 on a closing basis.

Wage cost of IT firms eases
Mint analysis, Wipro, which had the highest wage burden among Indian IT companies, spent 60.5% of revenue on employee benefits, down from 61.4% in Q1FY24 and 61.5% in Q2FY24. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) spent 57.3% of revenue for employees in Q3, compared to 58.8% in Q2,and 59.2% in the first quarter of the current fiscal year. HCL Technologies allocated 55.8% to employee costs in Q3, down from 57.2% in Q2 and 57.1% in Q1, while for Infosys it was at 53.2% in Q3, declining from 53.8% in Q2 and 54.3% in Q1.
