Study finds higher temperatures can make dengue virus more virulent
Dengue virus could become more virulent due to increasing temperatures, according to a study that could help in predicting and mitigating the severity and virulence of the recurring tropical disease that witnesses an outbreak in the monsoon. Researchers at Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) in Kerala found that dengue becomes more severe and hostile in animal models when its virus (DENV) while being grown in mosquito-derived cells is exposed to higher temperatures. The research, published recently in the FASEB journal, can help in predicting and mitigating the severity and virulence of dengue which has an estimated global disease burden of 390 million cases per year. «Dengue being a mosquito-transmitted disease, the ability of the causative virus to grow in the cells of mosquito as well as in humans is a critical factor in viral virulence. The body temperature of mosquitoes is not constant as in higher animals and it increases or decreases with the environmental temperature,» said Easwaran Sreekumar, the team leader of the research from RGCB. «So far it is not known whether the higher temperature growth condition will affect the virulence of the virus. For the first time, our recent study points out that there is such a possibility. DENV cultured at a higher temperature in mosquito cells was significantly more virulent than the virus grown at a lower temperature,» the researchers said. The team of researchers at RGCB involved in the study includes Ayan Modak, Srishti Rajkumar Mishra, Mansi Awasthi, Sreeja Sreedevi, Archana Sobha, Arya Aravind, Krithiga Kuppusamy, and Sreekumar.

Headline inflation to spike in near months on food prices, El Nino event: RBI MPC Minutes
Ashima Goyal, Jayanth R Varma and Rajiv Ranjan voted for status quo on the policy rate. Going forward, the spike in vegetable prices, led by tomatoes, would exert sizeable upside pressures on the near-term headline inflation trajectory. This jump is, however, likely to correct with fresh market arrivals.

Where should you buy the dip in this market? Sunil Subramaniam answers
Sunil Subramaniam, MD & CEO, Sundaram Mutual, says “IT, pharma, metals, global cyclicals, energy would be the ones where you would see rapid rises and falls. I would say that if something has gone up very rapidly recently, that is where the decline would come because they are a lot related to news flows and less fundamental related in terms of what actual quarter on quarter numbers are coming in. ”Markets will not go up in a straight line, not will they go down in a straight line. But there are a lot of stocks which have only gone up. Defence, railways, Chandrayaan stocks. If markets have to correct, where do you think the decline would come from? And where would you like to buy that dip in terms of finding value?I would say that the decline would come from 1)globally related sectors, one because that is where the news is very confusing whether it is a hard recession, slowdown, soft recession or rate hikes.

Chandrayaan-3: ISRO hopes mission life of lander and rover will not be limited to one lunar day
Chandrayaan-3's lander and rover on the moon, ISRO is hoping that their mission life will not be limited to one lunar day or 14 earth days, and that they will come back to life when the sun again rises on the Moon, to carry on with the experiments and studies there. Following the deployment of the lander and rover, the systems on them are now ready to perform experiments one after the other so as to complete them within 14 earth days, before the pitch darkness and extreme cold weather engulfs the Moon. The lander (Vikram) touched down near the south pole of the Moon at 6.04 pm on Wednesday, successfully completing one of the Chandrayaan-3 mission's stated objectives of soft landing on lunar surface. Earlier today ISRO announced that the rover (Pragyan) rolled down from the lander, stating, "India took a walk on the Moon." ISRO had earlier said the 26 kg six-wheeled rover was scheduled to descend from the lander's belly on to the Moon's surface, using one of its side panels which acts as a ramp. The lander and rover — with a total mass of 1,752 kg — are designed to operate for one lunar daylight period (about 14 Earth days) to study the surroundings there. However, ISRO officials do not rule out the possibility of them coming back to life for another lunar day. Explaining what would happen after the lander's soft landing and deployment of the rover, ISRO Chairman S Somnath had earlier said, «After this, all the experiments (by payloads on lander and rover) will take place one after the other — all of which have to be completed in just one day on the Moon, which is 14 (Earth) days.» Noting that as long as the sun shines, all the systems will have its power, he said, «The moment the sun sets, everything will be in pitch

India on moon: What is next for Vikram and Pragyan?
MoS) for Science and Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh said that the Lander, Vikram has landed in a hazard-free location with the help of its algorithm and instruments. In a media briefing, the MoS explained the next course of action of Chandrayaan-3 mission. Apart from the cameras onboard, the confirmation about the soft-landing, ISRO has received by other sensors as well, he said. Meanwhile, ISRO also confirmed that a communication link has been established between the Chandrayaan-3 Lander and MOX-ISTRAC, Bengaluru. Fulfilling the dream of 140 crore Indians, the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft on Wednesday touched down on the surface of the Moon after its 41-day odyssey. Chandrayaan-3 is the most ambitious project of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) so far. The task for the duo is cut out and there are multiple operations they will do once they reach the lunar south pole. The Lander has the capability to touch down at a specified lunar site and deploy the Rover which will carry out in-situ chemical analysis of the lunar surface during the course of its mobility. The Lander and the Rover have scientific payloads to carry out experiments on the lunar surface.

Not just space: How ISRO is touching many facets of our everyday life
At a press conference soon after the Mars orbiter launch in 2013, a foreign journalist asked the same question: why should India send a mission to Mars when millions are in poverty? Then Isro Chairman K Radhakrishnan told him about the benefits of the space programme, but the journalist persisted with his argument. Many might raise the same question about Chandrayaan-3, India's third lunar spacecraft, which is scheduled to land on the Moon today. Though space research has some very obvious benefits such as telecommunication, weather forecasting, GPS, and detecting water bodies and minerals, going to Mars or landing on the Moon is seen by many as a vanity project.

Climate change doubled chance of weather conditions that led to record Quebec fires, researchers say
Climate change more than doubled the chances of the hot, dry weather that helped fuel the unprecedented wildfire season in eastern Canada that's driven thousands from their homes and blanketed parts of the US with choking smoke, according to an analysis released Tuesday. What's more, human-caused climate change made the fire season in Quebec — from May through July — 50% more intense than it otherwise would have been and increased the likelihood of similarly severe fire seasons at least sevenfold, researchers said. «The biggest takeaway is, this is because of us that we have seen so many fires this year,” due to greenhouse gas emissions, said Yan Boulanger, a research scientist in forest ecology for Natural Resources Canada. He was one of 16 researchers who collaborated on the analysis for World Weather Attribution, an initiative that aims to quickly evaluate the role of climate change in the aftermath of extreme weather events. Canada is in the middle of its worst wildfire season on record, with more than 5,800 fires burning over 153,000 square kilometers (59,000 square miles) from one end of the country to the other, according the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre.
