US Open: 'Nothing to lose' Ostapenko dethrones Swiatek
Jelena Ostapenko's «nothing to lose» mindset delivered the biggest upset of the US Open on Sunday as the hard-hitting Latvian sent defending champion Iga Swiatek crashing out. The 26-year-old 20th seed had never lost to Swiatek in three previous meetings and made it four-out-of-four with a brilliant 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory on the Arthur Ashe Stadium. The shock result sends Ostapenko into a quarter-final date with American sixth seed Coco Gauff on Tuesday, while Swiatek was left wondering where it all went wrong. The defeat also ensures that Aryna Sabalenka will end Swiatek's 75-week reign as world number one at the end of the tournament. Ostapenko had been the butt of jokes earlier in the tournament after making 80 unforced errors in a fitful second round win. But the Latvian had the last laugh with Sunday's win, saying she had been inspired by the packed 23,000-capacity arena. «I just honestly love to play on big courts with full stadiums and a lot of crowd,» Ostapenko said. «It's really the thing that we are working for and playing for. »I had nothing to lose today. I knew it was going to be a tough match.

UFC 293 date, time, live streaming, fight card, main card, main event
UFC is making its return to Australia with UFC 293 in Sydney, set to take place on Saturday. In the middleweight division, Israel Adesanya is finding himself with limited opponents to face. Although Dricus Du Plessis was briefly considered, plans have since changed. As a result, Adesanya is now slated to defend his championship belt against Sean Strickland at UFC 293, scheduled for September 9. This exciting event will be hosted at the Qudos Bank Arena in Australia and will be broadcast on ESPN+ in the United States. UFC 293 boasts an enticing main card that kicks off at 10 pm (ET) and is available on pay-per-view ($79.99, via ESPN+). Additionally, two sets of preliminaries will be aired on ESPNews and streamed on ESPN+ starting at 6:30 pm (ET). It's important to note that there is a significant time difference of 14 hours between Sydney and Eastern Standard Time. Israel Adesanya (24-2 MMA, 13-2 UFC) is set to defend his middleweight title for the first time during his second reign as the UFC middleweight champion when he faces off against Sean Strickland. Adesanya initially claimed the title in 2019 and successfully defended it five times before losing it to his kickboxing rival, Alex Pereira, in November 2022. However, in April, Adesanya avenged that defeat with a second-round knockout, regaining the championship belt. The star fighter, who is based in New Zealand, has long been anticipated to headline the UFC's return to Australia.

World losing high-stakes fight against alien species
Invasive species that wreck crops, ravage forests, spread disease, and upend ecosystems are spreading ever faster across the globe, and humanity has not been able to stem the tide, a major scientific assessment said Monday. The failure is costing well over $400 billion dollars a year in damages and lost income — the equivalent to the GDP of Denmark or Thailand — and that is likely a «gross underestimation», according to the intergovernmental science advisory panel for the UN Convention on Biodiversity (IPBES). From water hyacinth choking Lake Victoria in East Africa, to rats and brown snakes wiping out bird species in the Pacific, to mosquitoes exposing new regions to Zika, yellow fever, dengue and other diseases, the report catalogued more than 37,000 so-called alien species that have taken root — often literally — far from their places of origin. That number is trending sharply upward, along with the bill for the damage multiplying fourfold per decade, on average, since 1970. Economic expansion, population increase and climate change «will increase the frequency and extent of biological invasions and the impacts of invasive alien species,» the report concluded. Only 17 percent of countries have laws or regulations to manage this onslaught, it said. Whether by accident or on purpose, when non-native species wind up on the other side of the world, humans are to blame. The spread of species is hard evidence that the rapid expansion of human activity has so radically altered natural systems as to tip the Earth into a new geological epoch, the Anthropocene, scientists say. The hyacinth that at one point covered 90 percent of Lake Victoria — crippling transport, smothering aquatic life, blocking hydroelectric dam intake and
