It was The Beatles who sang this song which made fans worldwide scream with joy (at the sight of the boy band extraordinaire, more likely) and the band laughed all the way to the bank. But we’re at the end of 20023 and if you’re feeling a tad mellow, I’m sure you will love this version by Blackstreet Sometimes we value money over everything else as we allow the rat race to overwhelm us. Gun, 'gori' & gore: Bollywood's resurgence this year came with an unhealthy heaping of misogyny & unapologetic masculinity
Bollywood has made a financial comeback this year worthy of one of its traditional singing-on-top-of-the-hills moments. India's Hindi language movie industry made an impressive recovery after a pandemic-driven slowdown, audience fatigue with big studio productions and Bollywood megastars, and streaming platforms taking away a large chunk of viewership. According to consultancy firm Ormax Media, the cumulative box office in 2023 pulled in $1.3 billion, making it one of the best-grossing years of all time. Indian moviegoers — both the masses and niche film lovers — are back in theaters and the massive commercial success of big-ticket Bollywood films has set at ease fears that Mumbai's glitzy dream factory was losing its shine. As one of the largest film producers in the world, India rolls out more than 1,500 movies yearly, its diverse storytelling traditions reflected in its prolific cinematic entertainers. The films that made the cut this year were a mixed bag of visual delights.

2023, a blockbuster year for film industry
Indian film industry, in general and for Bollywood in particular, with four Hindi films crossing ₹500 crore each in box-office earnings and the gross box-office collections projected to touch a new high of ₹12,000 crore. Bollywood's resurgence has been driven by diverse content offerings, innovative marketing, and pent-up demand among audiences for experiencing movies on the big screen notwithstanding the rise of streaming platforms, industry executives and experts said. While star-studded films like Gadar 2, Pathaan and Animal did send the cash registers ringing, mid-budget films such as 12th Fail and Sam Bahadur have performed reasonably well. After a challenging 2022, Bollywood delivered four films — Gadar 2, Pathaan, Jawan, and Animal — with box-office earnings of over ₹500 crore. In 2022, the gross box-office collection of ₹10,637 crore was driven largely by South Indian films KGF: Chapter 2, RRR and Kantara, according to a report of consultancy firm GroupM-Ormax Media.

Aim for clarity: In defence of a work-life imbalance
The global mind industry’s most popular spurious advice is that we must maintain a ‘work-life balance.’ This view is popular because it has the word ‘balance’ in it. People tend to believe that anything that seeks balance must be wise, healthy and correct. But from what I have seen, the best way to live is to have a singular preoccupation and bet most of one’s life on pursuing it.

New York Times sues OpenAI and Microsoft for feeding their generative AI beasts fodder from the organic food trough of the Grey Lady, we ponder over what happens to the news that is not fit to print, but comes out of ChatGPT and Bing Chat smelling of NYT anyway. Apart from the newspaper making a lot of money if it wins the case, there is a chance that those emulating the two most famous generative AI models will find a way to tweak language learning models by leaving no — pardon the pun — paper trail. As every college plagiarist worth his or her salt knows (by picking this knowledge up from somewhere else), nearly nothing is original or new, and certainly no information is anyone's monopoly.
