Kovind-led panel aims at “minimum possible” amendments to Constitution and election-related laws
Kovind-led panel is aiming at “minimum possible” amendments to the Constitution and various other election-related laws, to enable a switch to simultaneous polls. However, this is bound to be challenging given that assessments so far point to extensive constitutional and legal amendments. Anubhuti Vishnoi takes a look: First Time: Law Commission’s 1999 report called for a two-phase process with some assemblies going to polls midterm of the Lok Sabha and the remaining at the end of Lok Sabha’s tenure with EC notifying polls six months before completion of term. Niti Aayog’s 2015 proposal also pitched for a two-phase process while the EC has suggested that all elections falling in one year be conducted together, and states going to polls in the same year as general elections be clubbed with Lok Sabha polls.

Climate change: Scientists explore ‘injecting ice’ to reduce water vapor and cool Earth
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and NASA plan to inject ice high up in the air so that water vapour in the upper atmosphere would get a bit drier and that could counteract a small amount of the human-caused warmth. Notably, Water Vapour is a potent player in the Earth's greenhouse effect that eventually leads to the increase in the planet's surface temperature. According to NASA, Earth's surface temperature would be about 59 degrees Fahrenheit (33 degrees Celsius) colder without the greenhouse gases.

SC to hear Gyanvapi committee's plea against HC order on maintainability of temple restoration suits
Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear an appeal of the Gyanvapi management committee against an Allahabad High Court order which held that lawsuits for «restoration» of a temple where the mosque stands in Varanasi are maintainable. «We will tag this with the main case,» a bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra said. The plea in the top court was filed by the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid, the committee which manages the affairs of the Gyanvapi mosque. On December 19 last year, the Allahabad High Court had dismissed pleas challenging the maintainability of a 1991 suit seeking the «restoration» of a temple at the site where the Gyanvapi mosque stands.
