Govt allows sugar mills to use existing stocks of B heavy molasses for ethanol production
ethanol to be used in the next cycle, the official added. This decision underscores the government's comfort with the current level of sugar production relative to domestic consumption needs, said the official who did not want to be identified. The directive comes at a crucial time as it aligns with the end of the sugarcane crushing season and supports India's ambitious ethanol-blending targets—E15 by 2023-24 and E20 by 2025-26.

Climate change poses a child labour ‘threat multiplier’
climate change is only making it worse. Now, a newly developed quantitative approach may help raise its prominence as an environmental, social and governance issue. The AI-driven tool, known as the Child Labor Index, scores companies in three areas: disclosure levels, public perception and the commodity-level exposure of the supply chain to child labor. Fund managers can use the scores to pinpoint high-risk companies and identify others that need to confront the issue. Among investors, “the level of awareness of child labor is incredibly low,” said Eleanor Harry, chief executive and founder of HACE, the UK-based startup that developed the index. “This will help them monitor risk in their portfolio.”

View: The ‘Modi-fication’ of India is still thrilling markets
investors were right to back him as an agent of change, Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party peppered its 2014 poll manifesto with 22 references to “reform.” Ten years later, very little remains of that zeal. The BJP’s 2024 manifesto still promises to “reform, perform, transform.” But the few specifics it offers on the economy are modest — such as automatic approvals for standard housing designs. Gone are the days when Modi pledged to change everything from inefficient markets in labor and farm produce to entire sectors like banking. And yet, the appetite for a third term for the Indian leader is very high in the global financial industry. “Modi has done an unbelievable job in India,” JPMorgan Chase & Co. Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon said Tuesday at the Economic Club of New York. Both Goldman and JPMorgan are predicting a deluge of overseas capital after general elections are over on June 4. (The BJP is favorite to win the contest.)

Price rise is a pet peeve for voters. Can it shape poll results, too?
Inflation, although not the only factor influencing voter behaviour, has historically triggered considerable concern ahead of elections—whether it was the skyrocketing onion prices before the 1998 polls or the double-digit inflation prior to 2014. The recent price pinch has forced the current government, too, to announce measures such as the reduction in petrol and diesel prices. “If you see the nature of inflation shocks in India, they tend to be more on the supply side, which is food and fuel, and the levers to contain those happen to be in the hands of the governments," said Renu Kohli, senior fellow at Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP).
