AP finds grueling conditions in Indian shrimp industry that report calls 'dangerous and abusive'
an investigation released Wednesday by the Chicago-based Corporate Accountability Lab, a human rights legal group, that found workers face “dangerous and abusive conditions." AP journalists obtained access to shrimp hatcheries, growing ponds, peeling sheds and warehouses, and interviewed workers, supervisors and union organizers. India became America’s leading shrimp supplier, accounting for about 40% of the shrimp consumed in the U.S., in part because media reports including an AP investigation exposed modern day slavery in the Thai seafood industry. AP’s 2015 reporting led to the freedom of some 2,000 enslaved fishermen and prompted calls for bans of Thai shrimp, which had been dominating the market.

FTC finds large grocers used size to stock shelves during pandemic
Federal regulators said large grocery chains used their size and scale to keep shelves stocked during the pandemic, edging out smaller rivals when most stores struggled with product shortages and distribution bottlenecks. The Federal Trade Commission said in a report released Thursday on the impact of Covid-19 supply-chain disruptions that large retailers used their size to pressure suppliers of food and household goods, the agency said, including putting stricter delivery requirements into place and fining vendors that didn’t comply.

More than two-thirds of banks see erosion in their low-cost deposits as customers chase higher yields
banks have seen an erosion in their low cost deposits as customers chase higher yields, and infrastructure demand is accelerating with the segment witnessing strong loans growth, showed a survey of bankers. ``Customers’ search for higher rates and the ability to lock those interest rates for a longer time has led to a shift in favour of term deposits,’’ said the FICCI-IBA Survey of Bankers. ``Term deposits have picked up pace. Around 70% respondents have reported a decrease in the share of CASA deposits in total deposits.’’ Some sectors like infrastructure, iron & steel and food processing are witnessing growth in long term credit demands. Major infrastructure development plans have been in place by the Government to facilitate quick capital spending with a strong multiplier effect and this is likely to spur demand for infrastructure financing, said the report.
