What the Asia-Pacific needs to leap forward on climate action
climate action, the Asia-Pacific needs to start delivering on ambitious emissions targets. The Asia-Pacific's greenhouse gas emissions keep rising and in some respects the region is going backwards. Climate action was the only Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 13) in which outcomes went backwards in the Asia-Pacific between 2015 and 2023. Progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 13, taking «urgent action to address climate change», has been a case of two steps forward, one step back in the Asia-Pacific. Over the past two years, countries in the Asia-Pacific have made strides: China and Indonesia have undertaken to transition their economies to net zero by 2060, Australia and most Southeast Asian countries by 2050. China has massively invested in renewable energy.

How the Indo-Pacific can beat the SDG cash crunch
A handful of initiatives in the Indo-Pacific region show what can be achieved through international partnerships, even while fallout from global events hinders cooperation on development and climate action. Global cooperation is the central theme of Sustainable Development Goal 17, but also the key to success across the other 16 goals. The past year has shown why that success is so critical. This year has seen the hottest summer on record, with average global temperatures projected to continue to rise, and more extreme weather conditions, including raging wildfires across the world.

Commodity Talk: Crude oil could hit $105 in 2023, stoke inflation: Jateen Trivedi of LKP Securities
Investors and traders should consider a cautiously bullish stance on crude oil. The recent 30% increase from June's low of $71.60 to the current $93 suggests upward momentum, but it may be limited, potentially reaching levels around $106-110 in the next six months, offering a 10-15% upside, Jateen Trivedi, Vice President, Research Analyst at LKP Securities said. However, it's essential to be mindful of the higher risk of a decline toward $80-85, he cautions.Considering the current trends in crude oil prices, where do you see Brent/WTI price targets in the near term and for the year 2023?In the near term, Brent and WTI crude oil prices could rise by around 4-5%, reaching approximately $98 and $95 per barrel, respectively. For the full year 2023, they may touch levels of $105 and $100 per barrel, driven by factors like supply constraints and increasing global demand.

Union minister R K Singh hits out at Bengal govt for 'not implementing' PM Kusum scheme
R K Singh on Sunday criticised the West Bengal government for «not implementing» the PM Kusum scheme, which could have helped farmers by way of lower power costs. The scheme envisages installation of solar panels for running irrigation pumps, which are usually operated with diesel. Singh, the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, said under the scheme, the Centre provides 30-per cent assistance as viability gap funding. «With this viability gap funding, solar power generation costs would come down and farmers can benefit from lower electricity tariff… But the Bengal government has not implemented it,» Singh said here. The electricity distribution company of the state government would only have to invite bids from private agencies, which set up solar panels, and then buy power from them, he said. The agency with the lowest bid would be awarded the contract.

Commodity Talk: Crude oil may remain above $95/BBL on steady demand, supply squeeze: Navneet Damani of MOFSL
India is the world’s 3rd largest oil importer and the rise above $95 could bring back inflation fears and put pressure on India's fiscal math. India’s current account deficit can widen, thus weakening its currency, says Navneet Damani, Head of Commodity & Currency Research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services.Considering the current trends in crude oil prices, where do you see Brent/WTI price targets in the near term and for the year 2023? Oil prices have been on a roll trading at 10 months highs recently, as Chinese central banks have been cutting cash reserve requirements to boost its economic recovery, expectations of peaking interest rate cycles by major central banks along with output cuts driven by Saudi Arabia and Russia amid record global consumption. Prices got a further boost after the IEA warned that continued supply cuts by the two OPEC+ leaders are likely to create a “significant supply shortfall” and threaten further price volatility.

Decoding L&T's buyback and upcoming IPOs: Insights from Mahantesh Sabarad
“Reflecting on the recent market dynamics, where small-cap and mid-caps have seen a dip in prices over the past week, these IPOs might not seem alluring to investors due to their relatively high valuations,” says Mahantesh Sabarad, independent market expert. Edited excerpts:ET Now: I want to discuss the L&T buyback that opens on Monday, 18th September. Given the recent surge in the price of L&T over the last month, the buyback price is now around 3200. How do you view L&T's momentum moving forward? Additionally, do you anticipate strong participation in this buyback tender?Mahantesh Sabarad: Firstly, a disclosure, I own L&T shares. But to address your question, if you consider the number of shares set for buyback and extinguishment, it's just about 2.2%. This, in my view, won't significantly alter the stock's overall fundamentals. Typically, post-buyback, one examines whether there will be a significant improvement in return on equity, as the base capital, the equity capital, diminishes. Since the equity capital reduction is likely just around 2.2%, it's not substantial enough for the ROE to improve merely because of the buyback. As for retail investor participation? Given the narrowing gap between the buyback price and the current market price, many investors might opt out of the buyback. However, I do anticipate that the company will complete the buyback with full subscription, even if the overall number of shares offered might decrease.

'Jawan' symbolises everything that's good & honest, says Shah Rukh Khan
Jawan' represents every Indian and it is an emotion that stands for «honesty, goodness and love», Shah Rukh Khan said on Friday, decoding what the film, which has become the superstar's second blockbuster of the year, means to him and the team. Critics have praised 'Jawan', directed by Tamil filmmaker Atlee, as one of the most politically-charged film of SRK's career for the way it handles issues such as farmers suicides, corruption and healthcare woes through a father-son story. At the film's success press conference, Khan said the director has put in so many layers in the narrative that will emerge gradually. «I'll tell you what 'Jawan' is to all of us… I think 'Jawan' is a feeling which every Indian has. I think 'Jawan' is an emotion.

United States largest public university system to hike tuition six per cent annually for next five years
California State University, the nation's largest public university system, voted Wednesday to raise student tuition by 6% each year for five consecutive years to try to narrow a $1.5 billion deficit, a decision that some students called disheartening. The university's governing board voted 15-5 to approve the increases that will start across the 23-campus system in the fall of 2024. Annual tuition for full-time California undergraduate students will increase by $342 next year to $6,084. By the 2028-2029 school year, those students will be paying $7,682. The tuition hikes are needed to provide support to students, both through financial aid and programs to help them succeed academically, university officials say. The extra revenue is also needed to give more resources to faculty and staff and maintain school facilities, according to a report about the system's finances released in May. The report found the system with 460,000 students, many of them minorities and first-generation college students, has enough revenue to cover about 86% of what it actually costs to meet student, staff, and institution needs, leaving it with a $1.5 billion gap. «We are at a crossroads and if we don't do it now… it's going to get more and more difficult,» said Julia Lopez, a CSU trustee and the co-chairperson of the working group that wrote this report.

SBI to raise ₹10kcr via infra bonds
State Bank of India is likely to raise up to ₹10,000 crore next week by issuing 15-year infrastructure bonds as the country's largest mass lender looks to garner long-term capital. «The bonds would have AAA rating from ICRA and India Ratings and the issuance will likely happen on September 22. The expectation on the coupon is around 7.45-7.50% which would represent a tight spread over comparable benchmarks,» a person aware of the development said. The person said SBI is unlikely to carry out more infrastructure debt issues this financial year after the upcoming bond sale. On July 31, the country's largest bank sold 15-year infrastructure bonds worth ₹10,000 crore at a coupon of 7.54%, representing an aggressive spread over the comparable government security curve of such a tenure as investor demand was strong.
