The stampede happened in a village in Hathras district, about 200 km southeast of the national capital New Delhi, where authorities said a large crowd had gathered on an open area of land in response to a call from a religious leader. Here is a list of major stampedes in India over the years, most of them at religious festivals or gatherings: JANUARY 2005: More than 265 Hindu devotees were killed and hundreds more injured after a stampede at the Mandhardevi temple in Wai town in the western state of Maharashtra. UP-Hathras Stampede: How crowding, humidity led to 121 deaths in Hathras horror. What we know so far
Uttar Pradesh, a tragic stampede during a religious congregation led by 'Vishwa Hari Bhole Baba' has claimed the lives of at least 121 people, leaving over 300 others injured. The victims, predominantly women and children, were part of a massive crowd that had gathered near Phulrai village in the Sikandrarau area. The stampede left over 300 people injured, overwhelming local medical facilities. The stampede occurred around 3:30 PM as thousands of attendees rushed to touch the feet of Bhole Baba, whose real name is Surajpal, a former police officer turned religious preacher. According to eyewitnesses, parts of the ground had become boggy due to water overflowing from a nearby drain, causing people to slip and fall over one another. Overcrowding was cited as a primary factor, with attendance far exceeding the 80,000 figure mentioned in the event organizers' application. Reports indicated that nearly 2.5 lakh people attended the 'satsang'. Prakash Kumar, an injured attendee from Aligarh, recounted, “There was a large crowd at the site. There was no way out, and people fell on each other and fainted. When I tried to move out, there were motorcycles parked outside, which blocked my way.”

'Miracles' and hope: Hathras stampede spotlights India's craze for godmen
Bhole Baba" and Ramkumari said a stone in her kidney vanished. The 85-year-old gave no proof but this story and countless others of similar "miracles" led to Baba's following rocketing in India's northern states. A gathering addressed by the former police head constable in a crowded field last week drew a quarter of a million people and caused one of the deadliest stampedes in the country. Bhole Baba, or Innocent Elder, was born Suraj Pal Singh Jatav. He quit the police in 2000 to join a series of Hindu preachers and gurus in India who are sought by millions for miracle cures and spiritual advice. They are often called godmen, and many have been wooed by politicians for the influence they wield.

Mint Quick Edit | T20 World Cup was won by great prep work
How many teams train for low-probability events? It can make a big difference, as both of India’s T20 World Cup cricket triumphs demonstrate. In 2007, when India beat Pakistan in the final match, we had a psychological edge going into it for having beaten the latter in a league match by means of a spectacular but unprecedented tie-breaker called a bowl-out. In this rarest of rare cases, both were tied at 141 runs in 20 overs.
