Maruti Suzuki's workhorse SUV Brezza raced past Hyundai Motor India's Creta to occupy the top slot on the sales chart last month. Maruti Suzuki sold 19,190 units of the Brezza in August, ahead of Hyundai's flagship SUV, Creta which sold around 16,760 units. While Creta slipped to the third spot in the best-selling list last month, Tata Motors' popular model Punch fell to the fifth position with sales of about 15,640 units.

Tata Motors is looking to consolidate its position in the SUV segment as it marks its entry into the highly competitive mid-size space which is currently dominated by South Korean and Japanese carmakers. The Mumbai-based auto major on Monday launched midsize SUV coupe Curvv with petrol and diesel powertrains with a price starting at Rs 9.99 lakh. The company has already unveiled the electric version of the model in August. The model would be competing with the likes of Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, and Honda Elevate, among others.

Sales of passenger vehicles in the local market declined for the second straight month in August, on a high base, and with carmakers reducing dispatches to rationalise stocks at dealerships. According to industry estimates around 350,000-355,000 cars, sedans and utility vehicles were dispatched from factories to dealerships last month, which is a decline of 1.7-3% over 361,123 vehicles sold in August 2023.
